Such wonderful news! The vast majority of breakfast cereals on the market are comprised of highly refined and highly inflammatory grains, which are coated in sugar. Skipping breakfast would be a much healthier option.

An interesting article appeared in the business section of the New York Times titled “Cereals begin to lose their Snap, Crackle and Pop”.  Cereal consumption peaked in the 1990s, but for several reasons, consumption is declining. Of course, some people are just choosing equally unhealthy options for breakfast, such as a bagel or breakfast bar. However, a large group of people are realising that real food is a much healthier meal option. By real food I mean food that doesn’t come out of a packet.

There’s an interesting quote in the article from a former cereal consumer: “You realize that it’s just a sugar delivery vehicle,” he said of cereal. “We’ve all gotten a little smarter about the foods we eat, and while there are plenty of healthy cereals out there, I just don’t choose to eat much cereal.”

Most breakfast cereals are not likely to keep you feeling full and satisfied for long because they are relatively high in sugar, while being low in protein and healthy fats. A much healthier breakfast might consist of eggs and vegetables, or leftovers from the previous dinner. If you like to eat grains in the morning, avocado on good quality bread, or porridge are also good options.
