Studies have shown that type 2 diabetics have significantly lower levels of glutamine in their bodies. Supplementing with glutamine can help diabetics to lose weight and also better manage their blood sugar. Recently a six week double blind, placebo controlled trial was carried out on type 2 diabetics. 53 individuals completed the trial; 27 of them were given a glutamine supplement and 26 were given a placebo. The patients who were given glutamine took 30 grams of the amino acid per day; some with each main meal. At the end of the study there were major differences between body mass, waist circumference, blood sugar levels and average HbA1c levels among the two groups. The group taking glutamine also experienced a reduction in systolic blood pressure.  No effects were seen on cholesterol levels, triglycerides or C-reactive protein. Glutamine has numerous health benefits; it helps to improve gut health by reducing “leaky gut syndrome”, and it helps to enhance muscle recovery after exercise. Glutamine is also great for reducing sugar and carbohydrate cravings. Taking a glutamine supplement is an easy way for type 2 diabetics to support their health and weight loss efforts. You can find glutamine supplementation in our Ultimate Gut Health Powder. Reference: Mansour A, Mohajer-tehrani M, Qorbani M, et al.
