Six months ago I saw a lovely lady aged in her early 40s who was very sick with an enlarged toxic (overactive) multinodular goitre. This means that she had an enlarged thyroid gland with multiple nodules (lumps) that was pumping out excessive doses of thyroid hormone. Her blood thyroid levels were extremely high and she had all the signs of an overactive thyroid gland – namely weight loss, anxiety, insomnia, diarrhea, racing heart beat and exhaustion. Her thyroid gland was painful for her and was tender and lumpy on examination. Her caring older sister had brought her from the country town of Dubbo to see me in Sydney and was desperate for help. This woman was very ill and I needed to stop her thyroid from pumping out the huge amounts of thyroid hormone which could result in heart failure. To achieve this, I prescribed the drug neomercazole, which prevents this within a few weeks. I prescribed a small dose of cortisone to calm the inflammation down quickly. I told her to rest and get more sleep and avoid stress at all costs. I also put her on a simple detoxification diet where she had to avoid gluten, sugar and processed foods. She was to do raw juicing with green leafy organic vegetables, carrot, ginger and citrus fruits. I prescribed the following supplements – Her blood and urine tests showed that she was low in vitamin D, had a raised CRP level (indicating high inflammation) and was low in iron. Her urinary iodine levels showed that she was slightly low in iodine so I could be sure that her toxic goitre was not due to excessive body iodine levels. Indeed, at a later time I would be able to prescribe her an iodine supplement such as Thyroid Health Capsules. Her low iron levels were probably due to her previously heavy menstrual bleeding and for this I prescribed progesterone cream and an iron supplement. I also prescribed vitamin D in a dose of 5000IU daily as vitamin D is important to reduce inflammation. Her blood tests revealed that she had the HLA DQ genetic pattern that predisposed to gluten intolerance so a gluten free diet would reduce inflammation in her body by improving her gut health. She also carried a defective MTHFR gene that indicated she was a slow methylator which made her poor at detoxification. This genetic weakness would be overcome with the Livatone Plus formula which contains activated folic acid (folinic acid) and methyl cobalamin (vitamin B 12). Livatone Plus also contains NAC (N-Acetyl-Cysteine) which helps the liver to detoxify. I referred this woman to a local thyroid surgeon for his opinion, although the aim was to try and avoid having to remove her thyroid gland or to irradiate and destroy her thyroid gland. The thyroid surgeon was happy to observe her and avoid surgery at this stage. This week, 6 months after she initially presented to my medical clinic, the surgeon wrote to me with a summary of her progress. He was delighted to report to me that she was now completely free of thyroid disease and did not need any surgery. She no longer needed the neomercazole or steroids and was actually in total remission. He was happy to see her in 12 months time and left her to my ongoing care. Even though I have been practising holistic medicine for 40 years I still find myself impressed with the success of this approach. This case illustrates the effectiveness of holistic medicine and that it can result in a cure of severe endocrine disorders without the need for surgery.   The above statements have not been evaluated by the FDA and are not intended to diagnose, treat or cure any disease.
