Marta is a 43 year old lady who came to my clinic wishing to resolve chronic digestive problems. She suffered with nausea almost every morning and she had been diagnosed with gallbladder sludge. Sludge occurs when the bile becomes excessively thick and it can eventually progress into gallstones.

Marta had been reading the articles on my website for several months and she was trying to improve her condition. She had bought my book called Save Your Gallbladder, and what to do if you’ve already lost it. Gallbladder problems ran in Marta’s family and she was terrified she may need to have her gallbladder removed at some stage. Luckily at the moment there are no reasons why this would need to happen.

She tried to eat well most of the time but Marta was an emotional eater. She prepared healthy meals for herself most days, comprised of protein and vegetables, but Marta was prone to snacking. She claimed she didn’t handle stress very well. Her job was demanding, and feeling tired and nauseous much of the time made it difficult for her to be productive and get her work done. When stressed, she snacked on cookies during the day and ice cream after dinner. By the end of the day her abdomen was bloated and tender, her tongue had a thick white coating and the next morning the nausea was worse then usual. Marta also experienced abdominal cramps and urgent diarrhea when she wasn’t eating well.

My recommendations for my patient

  • Firstly I recommended a magnesium supplement for Marta. Magnesium is a wonderfully calming mineral. It helps reduce anxiety and tension and enables a deeper, more restful sleep.
  • Ox bile is excellent at helping to break up gallstones and sludge in the gallbladder. The bile acids and bile salts help to make the bile that’s in the gallbladder thinner. Ox bile assists with fat digestion and in that way helps reduce nausea. I asked Marta to take 1 capsule with each meal.
  • A diet that is based on protein and vegetables is best for Marta, but often her meals didn’t contain enough protein or fat. That meant she wasn’t very satisfied, and felt hungry afterwards. That made cookies more tempting and it was more difficult to stay with her healthy diet. I asked her to increase her portion sizes of meat, seafood or poultry, and be more generous with olive oil.
  • Lemon juice, lime juice and apple cider vinegar all help improve gallbladder health and reduce nausea. I asked Marta to use them as dressings on her salads.
  • A high sugar diet will inevitably lead to the overgrowth of bad sugar-loving yeast, Candida and bacteria in the gut. That can lead to abdominal bloating, foggy head, low mood or anxiety. I asked Marta to take one BactoClear capsule with each meal as it contains antimicrobial essential oils of clove, oregano and thyme.
  • Marta usually didn’t drink enough water. This can lead to fatigue and feelings of hunger, making it harder to stay away from sugary foods. Being adequately hydrated each day can greatly help reduce food cravings.

I will see Marta again in four weeks.
