Is there a big event coming up- a birthday, wedding or anniversary? Is the looming hangover giving you a headache just thinking about it?? Here are some tips to help you avoid or fix hangover symptoms quickly, apart from the obvious and avoiding excess alcohol!

How does excess alcohol affect your liver?

The liver is the organ which is most affected by alcohol consumption. This is because alcohol needs to be metabolised by the liver in order for it to be removed from the body. Excessive alcohol consumption, especially if long-term, can potentially cause conditions such as fatty liver, alcoholic hepatitis (inflammation of liver cells), cirrhosis (liver cell death) and liver cancer.

Before you drink alcohol…

Drink “fix-hangover” vegetable juices such as:
½ inch (1cm) ginger root
2 Oranges
1 apple
1 carrot
½ cup green cabbage, chopped
1 teaspoon juice boosting supplement

Take a good quality liver tonic with B vitamins included in it such as Livatone Plus

Eat a meal containing easily digested protein (eg eggs, ricotta, cottage or fetta cheeses or acidophilus yoghurt, or whey protein)

Drink plenty of water.

While you’re drinking alcohol..

• Drink slowly
• Drink only in moderation
• Drink a glass of water in between alcohol containing drinks

If you have a hangover, consider the following for quick relief…

• Consume foods and drinks that contain fructose (such as fruit juice or honey)
• Drink plenty of water to treat dehydration
• Eat foods which have a high concentration of potassium such as bananas and other fruit
• Drink raw vegetable juices and add a juice boosting powder to the juice
• Take a good quality liver tonic with B vitamins included in it such as ½ teaspoon of Livatone Plus
• Have a nap in a dark room
• Wear ear plugs
• Place ice pack or cold flannel on head

Good luck and we know you will be holding your head and saying – “never again will I do this to myself” !!!
