I am a firm believer in the value of supporting the detoxification systems in the body especially in this day and age, where mankind has disturbed the natural environment and the food chain. The fact that we are exposed to more toxic chemicals and infections of the digestive tract is unquestionable.

I see many patients with disorders of their immune system and liver who have been unable to get an accurate diagnosis or effective treatment from drug therapy. These patients find that a so called “healthy conventional diet” does not improve their health. So what are these patients to do? Surely they do not want to give up in their search for a solution and accept a life of poor health!

If you are in this situation, I would encourage you to try a safe and effective detoxification program.

This includes juicing of raw vegetables, as this provides a high concentration of antioxidants to support the liver detoxification pathways. You can also include the specific foods and supplements on a regular basis in your daily life to keep your digestive tract and thus your immune system strong. There is a huge body of evidence available to show that those who consume a diet high in fresh fruits and vegetables and take antioxidants such as selenium, vitamin C and vitamin E have a stronger immune system.

Some detractors of detoxification say that your liver and kidneys are able to detoxify your body without any help from you, which assumes that they are always working at 100% efficiency. This is not always true.

For example if you have a fatty liver where the liver’s filter is overloaded with fat, bacteria and toxins, it will not cleanse the blood stream efficiently. Like any filter in any engine, the liver filter needs cleansing, and unfortunately you cannot unzip your abdomen and take out your liver and wash it with running water and a degreasing agent!

Nearly 20% of the population has a fatty liver because of years of incorrect diet and damage from drugs and environmental toxins. Many drugs and environmental toxins over work the natural detoxification pathways and filtering mechanisms in the liver and kidneys. This is one of the reasons that unexplained liver and kidney disease is so common.

Many of my overweight patients have found that they lose weight for the first time in years, just because they have introduced greater amounts of cleansing and raw foods into their diet. They did not reduce their intake of calories. Indeed I had one patient who lost over 10 kilograms just by starting to do raw juicing and eating one salad a day. This was because the raw foods improved the ability of her liver to burn fat.

Exercise can help the detox process because it promotes the flow of lymphatic fluid, which carries the peripheral toxins away from the tissues. Exercise also helps you to sweat more, which helps the elimination of toxins through the skin. For the same reasons saunas and body brushing can help, but remember you do not have to put your body under extreme measures of any of these modalities to achieve a detoxing benefit.

Let me share a case history with you, which demonstrates the therapeutic value of detoxing.

One of my patients presented to me for the first time in a terrible state. She had a bright purple psychedelic rash all over her face. This rash had been caused by the antibiotic drugs she had been prescribed to treat her mature onset acne. This type of acne is known as acne rosacea.

The antibiotic had not only caused this rash, it had also caused acute liver inflammation. The well meaning dermatologist had then prescribed this woman cortisone to suppress the side effects of the antibiotic. Unfortunately the cortisone damaged her heart resulting in an irregular heart beat.

When I saw the patient I diagnosed a fatty liver, which was seen on her ultrasound scan, and also explained why she was overweight and had developed the inflammatory acne in the first place. I placed her on the Liver Cleansing Diet and gave her cleansing liver tonic capsules and a program of raw vegetable juicing.

Within 3 months she had lost 12 kilograms, her face was now completely free of acne and the purple rash had gone and her liver function was normal. I have many case histories like this, and thus I am talking with the conviction of clinical experience in helping patients who are often looking for a last resort.
