Did you know April 7th is World Health Day? The focus this year is on raising awareness of diabetes, and the devastating health consequences it can cause. Around the world there are currently 350 million diabetics. This figure is expected to more than double in the next 20 years. Make sure you are not a statistic!

The vast majority of diabetics have type 2 diabetes, which is strongly associated with obesity. The liver has a lot to do with blood sugar levels and many type 2 diabetics have a fatty liver which is preventing them from controlling their blood sugar and also from losing weight.

If we improve their liver function they find it much easier to control their blood levels of insulin and glucose (sugar). The role of the liver in overcoming diabetes is often overlooked, which makes it much harder to achieve wellbeing and prevent complications of diabetes.

The hormone insulin controls the use of fats and sugars by the cells in your body. I like to describe insulin as a motor car and the fat and the sugar as the passengers inside the motor car. The fats and sugars cannot enter the cells by themselves – they need to be transported into the cells by a motor car called insulin. If this does not happen the fats and sugars cannot enter inside the cells and they accumulate in the bloodstream.

Thus the blood levels of sugar and triglyceride fat rise too much, and the pancreas responds by making more and more insulin and the result is too much insulin.

If the sugar cannot get inside the cell, the “motor car” will take it somewhere else – in this case, the insulin motor car takes the sugar to the liver or fat tissues, and turns it into fat. Yes, that’s right – sugar gets turned into fat instead of energy.

The results are –

  • You put on weight
  • You get a fatty liver
  • Your blood sugar levels rise
  • Your insulin levels rise
  • You get attacks of low blood sugar (hypoglycaemia) which make you feel tired and crave more sugar.

Now you can see how insulin is a fat storing hormone and if you produce too much insulin you will store more fat, especially in your liver and around your torso.

Most people get fat on a diet that is not high in fat and they don’t understand why.

It’s not the number of calories that matters so much, it is the source of the calories.

We must get the insulin motor car working efficiently to lower blood sugar and convert dietary fat and sugar into energy. This is explained in my book Diabetes Type 2: You can reverse it.

I have designed Glicemic Balance capsules to help insulin to work better, in other words, they support insulin to get the sugar out of your blood and into the cells. This enables efficient metabolism where sugar is used for energy and not for the storage of body fat.

Weight loss becomes much easier and the excess fat choking your liver is reduced via better metabolism.

Magnesium is also necessary for healthy insulin action. People who take blood pressure medication or diuretics (fluid tablets) are typically low in magnesium. Magnesium helps to relax your nervous system and makes you feel less stressed. Thus it is fantastic for people who eat when they feel stressed.

A healthy liver is very important for blood sugar control. This is because the liver can store glucose and fat, and also produce glucose and fat. You want your liver to be good at fat burning. People with a healthy liver have a fast metabolism and don’t gain weight as easily. Unfortunately a lot of people have a fatty liver and their liver is doing the opposite of what it should be doing – it is very busy making fat.

A healthy liver also helps to control your blood sugar level. If you have not eaten for several hours, your liver is supposed to release some stored glucose into your bloodstream to give you energy and keep hunger at bay. People with a sluggish liver struggle with this and they often feel excessively hungry, weak or irritable if they have gone several hours without food. It makes sticking to a diet extremely difficult! Taking a good quality liver tonic like Livatone Plus will provide the nutrients your liver requires in order to burn fat and detoxify your bloodstream more effectively.
