Sounds frightening but there is good evidence to support this claim. People with type 2 diabetes are at significantly higher risk of dementia. If you are a diabetic, it’s vital you work on protecting your brain.

Spanish researchers used MRI scans to check the brains of 614 people who had diabetes for an average of 10 years. The researchers made some startling discoveries:

  • The longer a person has diabetes, the smaller their brain. The part most prone to shrinkage is the grey matter that is required for muscle control, vision and hearing, speaking, memory ability, and emotions.
  • Everybody’s brain shrinks as they get older, but diabetics lose brain size more than twice as quickly as non-diabetics.
  • Diabetics are at greatly increased risk of dementia.
  • For every ten years a person has diabetes, their brain looks two years older than the brain of a person without diabetes.

The most important message from this study is the higher a person’s average blood sugar, the greater the loss of brain matter.

If saving your brain is important to you, you need to maintain a healthy blood glucose level

Elevated blood sugar is toxic and causes harm to nearly every part of the body. You are probably aware that diabetes can damage the kidneys, eyes and blood vessels. Now you know it’s toxic to the brain as well. Berberine is a natural plant extract that helps reduce elevated blood sugar, because it improves insulin sensitivity. In clinical trials, berberine outperforms some prescription medication for type 2 diabetes.

The good news is, in most cases type 2 diabetes can be reversed. See our book for more information. It is also critical to improve the health of your liver. The majority of type 2 diabetics have a fatty liver. Even slim looking ones. A fatty liver cannot store glucose properly. That means you are at risk of your blood sugar crashing. This can cause intense sugar cravings, fatigue, low mood or anxiety. It can make it extremely difficult to stick to a healthy diet. I formulated my liver tonic Livatone Plus to make your liver more efficient at burning fat and cleansing your bloodstream.
