Heating food in plastic containers in a microwave could be raising your blood pressure! When heated, plastic containers can release chemicals called phthalates into food. These chemicals can cause a number of metabolic problems. Phthalates are compounds found in some types of plastic, as well as a lot of cosmetics, fragrances and toiletries. Researchers at the New York University School of Medicine have linked phthalate levels in urine and their effect on children's health. In their study, published in the journal Hypertension, three types of phthalates were found to be responsible for higher blood pressure. A different study published in Endocrine Society found that phthalates can cause insulin resistance. Insulin resistance makes losing weight significantly harder and it raises the risk of type 2 diabetes. The National Institutes of Health state that phthalates act as endocrine disruptors, meaning they can cause the body’s hormone-producing glands to malfunction. Clearly there are a number of factors that can cause high blood pressure and insulin resistance such as diet, inactivity, medication side effects and others. However, minimizing your contact with phthalates should help your blood pressure and overall health. It is safer to heat food in glass or ceramic containers. The other alternative is the old fashioned way of heating leftovers in a pot on the stove. It is also best to try and avoid drinking water from plastic containers. Glass and stainless steel are safer.     Reference
