• It is absolutely necessary to be loved and approved by all the important people in my life if I want to consider myself as worthwhile.
  • It is unbearable when people and things are not the way I think they should be.
  • My unhappiness is caused by external circumstances.
  • I must always prove to others that I am a thoroughly confident person.
  • Unless I constantly worry about a problem it will only get worse.
  • It is easier to avoid certain life difficulties and responsibilities than it is to face them.
  • It is reasonable to be dependent upon others who are stronger than I am.
  • I should condemn everyone who acts unreasonably and unfairly to me and blame him or her for my stress.
  • I should become quite upset over other people’s problems and do all I can to alleviate theirs.
  • When people act unfairly or badly, they should be severely punished.

These irrational ideas contribute to depression with its associated symptoms of:

  • Anger
  • Fear
  • Resentment
  • Self-Pity
  • Guilt
  • Hopelessness
  • Lost motivation
  • Self-loathing

Often, the above emotions lead to falling off the wagon” and picking up a drink to alleviate the emotional pain. Once alcohol is ingested, self-discipline disappears and the compulsion to keep drinking is activated.

The drunk takes the drink and the drink takes the drunk.

But if you feel compelled to consume large quantities of alcohol all of a sudden, you are most likely drinking to anaesthetize troubling emotions.

That is, you are experiencing tension, depression, anxiety or boredom (which is really loneliness combined with the frustration that life is too hard), and you want to feel better fast.

How Co-Dependent People Upset Themselves

Emotional upsets are caused by the way we talk to ourselves about our problems. It is our perceptions and thoughts that cause us to be depressed, angry, fearful or jealous. It is not the way people behave towards us that create these feelings; it’s how we interpret them.

Intense negative feelings can lead to self-defeating behaviors like getting drunk.  It is important to learn how to change bitter anger and hostility to annoyance, to change depression to sadness, and to change anxiety to concern through changing our belief system.

Low self-esteem is the major toxic belief we can have about ourselves, and the cause of all our self-sabotaging behavior. Depression and anxiety are embedded in this toxic belief and linked to co-dependency behavioral problems.

It’s a belief that produces feelings of not being “good enough.” Feelings are not facts, and alcoholics suffering from low self-esteem, have to question and challenge their belief system in order to improve their feelings of low self-worth. Low self-esteem is the catalyst for alcohol dependency.

Children “learn” that they are not good enough. Some didn’t get the love, nurturing and emotional support they needed and they then believed it was because they were unworthy (this is an unconscious feeling – a toxic belief they have about themselves).

Changing your belief system (inner change) ultimately produces an outer change, leading to a healthy self-image (ego).

We recommend amino acids to help balance brain chemistry and a good liver tonic to help repair liver damage. Specific amino acids are essential for the liver to breakdown toxins and drugs and also for efficient metabolism in the liver.

L-Glutamine. This amino acid, which is provided in our Ultimate Gut Health, is required for phase two detoxification in the liver and is required in increased amounts by those who consume excessive alcohol. It is able to reduce the craving for alcohol.

L-Glutamine supplementation is helpful for intestinal disorders such as peptic ulcers and leaky gut syndrome. Leaky gut is the term used to describe an inflamed condition of the lining of the bowel, which makes the bowel too permeable, so that toxins and incompletely digested food particles can be absorbed from the bowels directly into the liver. This increases the workload of the liver and may cause many health problems.

L-Glutamine is essential for the white cells to fight viruses such as hepatitis B and C. Glutamine is converted in the body into glutamic acid, which, along with the amino acids cysteine and glycine, is converted into the powerful liver protector glutathione. Glutathione is essential for liver phase two conjugation reactions used during detoxification of drugs and toxic chemicals.

LivaTone Plus is a natural liver tonic containing the liver herbs St Mary’s Thistle with the benefits of Turmeric and Selenium.  It also contains all the B vitamins and the amino acid Taurine, as well as the antioxidants vitamin C and vitamin E.

The LivaTone Plus formula contains the clinically proven dose of silymarin (a daily dose of 420 mg of silymarin). LivaTone Plus is designed to support step one and two detoxification  pathways in the liver, essential in helping the alcoholic’s liver to return to normal.

The liver is the main fat burning organ in the body and regulates fat and carbohydrate metabolism. A healthy liver will take fat in the form of cholesterol and pump it via the bile into the intestines where it will be carried away in the bowel actions provided the diet is high in fibre.

Tyrosine Mood Food - Tyrosine is a natural amino acid - one of the building blocks of protein.  It is required for the manufacture of the brain chemicals (neurotransmitters) dopamine and noradrenaline.  These neurotransmitters are required for concentration, alertness, memory and a happy, stable mood.

Magnesium – the great relaxant. Magnesium plays an essential role in maintaining and promoting efficient muscle function and nerve transmission. Magnesium is a vital mineral for hundreds of cellular enzymes involved in the body's energy production and metabolism. It is required by the nervous system to regulate the function of nerves and muscles. Magnesium may also assist in the reduction of stress, nervous tension, anxiety and sleeplessness.
