A recent article in a Taiwanese newspaper stated that “The number of elementary school students with nearsightedness has risen in fewer than three weeks since summer vacation started earlier this month, because many of them stay at home and play on cell phones and tablet computers”. This is according to Hsinchu Cathay General Hospital.

The head of the hospital’s ophthalmology department, Chen Ying-shan found that most of the children had been playing on tablet computers or cell phones for more than four hours on average each day since the beginning of the summer holidays.

The average child spends a lot of time looking at screens. Small screens with small text are more harmful than large computer screens that are viewed at a distance. This can place a strain on the eyes and increase the risk of nearsightedness (myopia). This is particularly risky in children because their eyes are still developing.

This is a good reminder to encourage your children to have breaks from their phone and computer games, and spend a bit of time outside. This can help to preserve their eyesight, and it will also have physical and emotional benefits. Good nutrition is also important for healthy vision and especially the avoidance of sugar.
