According to the World Health Organization, the incidence of chronic disease in China has risen more than nine fold in just one generation! Rates of chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes are climbing everywhere in the world, but nowhere as fast as in China. It is thought that unhealthy lifestyles, population growth and aging are responsible for this. China holds 19 per cent of the world’s population but contained more than 30 per cent of adults with diabetes in 2014. It’s amazing to realize that in 1980, less than one percent of Chinese adults had type 2 diabetes. In 2014 that figure leapt to 9.4 percent. Each culture has their own unique susceptibilities and Chinese people are genetically much more likely to develop type 2 diabetes from a junk food diet than Caucasians. It’s interesting to note that Chinese people are far more at risk of developing the disease when they are a normal weight. They don’t have to be overweight to get type 2 diabetes. This is because they are more likely to accumulate visceral fat, which is fat in and around the abdominal organs. Therefore they are more likely to get a fatty liver and people with a fatty liver are at greater risk of type 2 diabetes – even if they are normal weight. The incidence of type 2 diabetes is going through the roof in most parts of the world. It is so sad to think of the shortened lifespans and years of ill health these people will suffer. Most people do not realize what a serious disease it is. Yes there are tablets that can be taken to control blood sugar, but they usually don’t prevent the horrific complications of the disease, such as blindness, kidney failure, heart attacks, limb amputations and erectile dysfunction. If caught early enough, most cases of type 2 diabetes can be reversed. See our book for more information.
