Serrapeptase

What is serrapeptase?

Serrapeptase is an enzyme that was first discovered in the intestine of silkworms.  This enzyme is necessary in order for the silkworm to dissolve the hard cocoon it is surrounded by, when it is ready to emerge as a moth.  The silkworm also uses this enzyme to allow it to feed on tough mulberry leaves.  These days, serrapeptase supplements are not derived from silkworms; the enzyme is derived from a natural fermentation process.  Serrapeptase is a protease enzyme; that means it has the ability to digest protein.  Research has shown this remarkable enzyme can help to dissolve non-living tissue in the body such as cysts, swellings, plaque and scar tissue.

Serrapeptase helps to reduce inflammation in the body

Serrapeptase - Joint Excessive inflammation is a feature of just about every disease and is present in any condition where pain, fatigue and fluid retention are present.  But what causes inflammation?  These are the most common causes:

  • Elevated blood sugar.  Certainly diabetics experience a great deal of inflammation in their bodies because of elevated blood sugar, but you don’t have to be a diabetic to experience this.  Regularly consuming sugar, grains and high glycemic load foods will flood your bloodstream with glucose.  Sugar is sticky and it can bind to proteins in your body and damage them.
  • Infections.  Any type of bacterial, viral, fungal or parasitic infection raises inflammation because your immune cells produce massive quantities of inflammatory chemicals as they try to fight the infection.  This is particularly a problem in chronic, long term infections.
  • Food allergy, intolerance and sensitivity.  Whenever you consume a food you are sensitive to, your body behaves as though you swallowed something harmful, such as a virus or bacteria.  As your immune system tries to cope with this scenario, it produces a host of inflammatory chemicals.  This can become a significant problem if you unknowingly eat this food(s) every day.
  • Stress.  Unfortunately the hormones your body produces while you are stressed cause inflammatory damage, free radical damage and a great deal of wear and tear to your body.  Magnesium  helps to counter some of this damage.
  • Lack of sleep or poor quality sleep.  Good solid sleep is one of the most powerful anti-inflammatory remedies there is, and it’s free and feels great.  Unfortunately most people know this but try as they might, they can’t get good sleep consistently.  Insomnia or just poor quality sleep is endemic in modern society.
  • Lack of antioxidants in your diet.  All of the various conditions listed above cause your body to use up vitamins, minerals and antioxidants at a much faster rate.  The problem is, most people don’t replenish their bodies with nutrients sufficiently.  Ideally you would consume a raw vegetable salad for lunch and dinner each day and include a glass of raw vegetable juice most days of the week.
  • Injuries, accidents and surgery are a major physical stress on the body and these processes all generate a great volume of inflammatory chemicals.  These inflammatory chemicals are very useful in acute conditions and are necessary for the recovery process.  Unfortunately many patients are left with chronic pain, swelling and immobility because the inflammatory process has continued for too long.  Serrapeptase is excellent for these people.

How serrapeptase can help

serrapeptase bonesIdeally you could reduce the level of inflammation in your body by addressing each of the points mentioned above.  Unfortunately, this is not always possible and sometimes the source of inflammation cannot be identified and remains hidden.

Serrapeptase basically works by giving your insides a good clean up.  Being a protein digesting enzyme, it helps to clear out protein deposits that are not serving a useful purpose in your body.  It has anti-inflammatory, anti-oedemic (reduces fluid retention) and fibrinolytic activity (helps to break down blood clots).  It can help to clear mucus, fluid, blood clots, debris and immune complexes from your body.  In this way it helps to reduce pain, improve mobility and increase energy.  Serrapeptase helps to keep arteries clean and clear because it reduces the inflammation in arteries which is what promotes cholesterol accumulation and narrowing of the arteries.

How should serrapeptase be taken?

Serrapeptase must be taken on an empty stomach in order to obtain the systemic anti-inflammatory benefits.  If you consume it with a meal, your body will use it to digest the food in your intestines.  Therefore most people find it easiest to take serrapeptase first thing in the morning.  You can eat half an hour later.  A typical starting dose is between 80 000 and 250 000 IU per day.

  2. I think my face is breaking out with serrapeptase .. is that normal.. just small bumps but bumps in areas I don’t normally get them…

    • Hi Marcia,

We have never had a patient experience a reaction like this to serrapeptase, so it is not likely to be due to the supplement.

  3. I have a severe gluten intolerance that causes severe headaches and 3 years ago I was diagnosed with myofacia pain disorder. I had liver damage due to a dr over prescribing a medication to me that landed me in the hospital for a week. My liver rejuvenated, and I have since become gluten free and have had no issues with my liver since. However I still have problems after I eat with headaches and joint pain. It is no where near as severe as before, but the reactions are still there. Do you recommend using the product after previous issues with the liver?

  4. I was informed that Serrapeptase is good for bartholin’s cysts. I have begun to take but question.. if you take with food is that necessarily bad? I find that I don’t usually drink unless I”m eating but I didn’t want to get sick if I did take with food or is is just not as effective?

    • Hi Marcia,

Serrapeptase is not as effective when taken with food, because the enzymes will digest the food, rather than cysts, scars, etc. in the body.

  6. Just to check can Serrapeptase be taken for lifetime? I had bad chronic Sinus which I taken Serratiopeptidase which I believe its the same as Serrapeptase and it really help to my sinus from getting worse and also to let you guys know before I stated Serratiopeptidase, I have to keep on revisiting the doctors every monthly to get alot of medications such as prednisolone, telfast D, Ventolin inhaler due to post nasal drip casuing my asthma problems, and almost every month will have an antibodies course due to infections on sinus pressure and lungs infections.
Do not think that sinus is a small problem as it will led to alot of complications which I am facing right now. However with Serratiopeptidase, seriously i have been better and my health has improved( not recovered fully but improved which I need not see doctor every month)

However since its a medication I buy from outside, I wonder if Serratiopeptidase can be taken for lifetime, any advise will be deeply appreciated. (Currently taking 3 times a day 10mg)

  8. I take thyroid meds twice a day 8am and 2pm. These are to be taken on an empty stomach. How would serrapeptase fit in with that? The easiest time I can think of would be 9:00pm. Is that okay to take it in the evening?

  15. Hi Jessah Robinson. I have Alpha 1 Antitrypsin Deficiency 54yo, liver and lung affected. AAT a glycoprotein polymerises in the liver and I have a variety of microbes on my lungs been taking 1 X or 2 X daily 45mg for 12 days with no adverse effects. I hope it will dissolve the backed up AAT in the liver and lungs and also clear bio-films. I will be seeing my chest specialist in October I will also follow up and report back here. There is nothing else like it on the market. Interestingly it has the same atomic weight as AAT 52 Da.

  16. I took one capsule daily for a few weeks when I developed profuse, painless diarrhoea with blood for three days. Also had nausea and vomiting for one day.. Stopped the supplement until all symptoms gone. Waited few days before taking the supplement. Felt fine one morning. Took one capsule. One hour later had sudden onset of the most severe “dry retching” that hurt my neck. Soon after the onset I also developed painless, profuse diarrhoea. Collapsed. Hospital admission. IV fluids. Nausea did not resolve until third IV anti nausea medication. Started to passing profuse Frank blood. Doctors incredulous that this was painless. No cramps but the nausea was very very severe. Never had symptoms like this. Suddenly all acute symptoms and bleeding stopped about four hours after onset. Nothing showed up in tests. I am very suspicious that this was triggered by Serrapeptase and do not have the courage to take it again. My symptoms must be recorded. There may have been others with similar symptoms and keeping a record impartially of all perceived side effects will help developed an accurate picture of real side effects.

    • Hi Lyn,

      Thank you for your email.

We will certainly keep a copy of your symptoms on our records for further reference.

Any supplement, or food for that matter, may produce an allergic type response.

It is wise to not take Serrapeptase in the future, and may we ask why you began taking it?

Although the tests were all negative, did the hospital order an abdominal ultrasound, because most cases of nausea and vomiting have a connection with the liver.

Because of the painless diarrhoea and bleeding, you are advised to have a colonoscopy and gastroscopy to ensure there is no digestive system abnormalities that may have caused the response to the Serrapeptase.

    • This happens to me. Couldn’t leave the toilet was throwing up and passing bawl movemnts. I stopped then started again and was close to going to the hospital! Will not use this supplement again.

      • Hi Jasmine,

Sorry to hear about your adverse reaction to Serrapeptase supplement. This is not a common reaction, so you must be allergic to it; this is a pity as Serrapeptase is excellent for inflammation, arterial health and joint health. People can be allergic to anything (eg. Herbs, nuts, shellfish etc) and this means they must avoid the culprit allergen. I do not know what you tried Serrapeptase for, but there may be other natural remedies that can help you. Feel free to email us for help.

        Kind Regards,
        Dr Sandra Cabot

  17. my 8 year old cairn terrier has high protein in urine will serreptase help and if so what dose should I give

We recommend you see a veterinarian.

  18. Hi, I have autoimmune hepatitis that caused late stage cirrhosis, splenomegally and portal hypertension. my platelets are low. Last reading was 32 thousand. I’ve been doing research on this and my concern of taking this supplement is seeing that it acts as an anticoagulant. Is this only for people who are on blood thinners or does this also apply to me? My MELD score is a 6. My blood is clotting well INR was a 1.0 and PT was 10.7. I eat extremely healthy… juicing, fruits an veggies. Most times when I take anything that naturally thins the blood I keep an eye out for things like nose bleeds or bruising. Believe it or not considering how low my platelets are I have no bleeds or esophageal varices. I will not ask a doctor because they will shrug any natural treatment off. So my main question is is this bad to take for someone who has low platelets caused by spleen enlargement? Thank you 🙂

    • Hi Melissa,

Thank you for your comment. We do not recommend Serrapeptase for someone in your scenario. It may over thin your blood. Livatone Plus, N-acetyl cysteine, glutamine and a probiotic are much more appropriate.

Great Thank you! I have been looking into the livatone. I have read her one book about healing autoimmune disease and been researching it. I am currently doing the Berkson Triple Therapy so once I run out of it I will look at the livatone. I like that it’s a perfect combination instead of what I’m doing now with separate ALA, milk thistle an selenium.Vitamins is where I have to be careful because I get plenty from the 5 juices I drink a day. I monitor everything through my labs to make sure it’s in range. I had high b12 so I had to stop the supplement. I have to tweak some things. Thank you for your response 🙂 Have a great weekend!

I am currently taking them for gallstones treatment, but I want to try serrapeptase for endometrioma and adhesions in the ovaries suspected from endometriosis.

It is best to take Serrapeptase after the drain has been removed. In most cases it is best to wait 2 weeks after surgery to begin taking Serrapeptase.
