Members of AA tell new members to leave it at least 2 years before entering the “I need a new man/woman in my life” scenario. I’m a bit more realistic and know that there are three things we need in this life and the first one is food; the second one is shelter and love is our third basic need. The human touch is so important but 100% more effective if we are sober. No one should risk sabotaging their early sobriety by jumping in bed with the first man who gives them a wink and a nudge. It’s also the same for the newly sober man. No one should walk where it’s slippery. Why is that? Well, relationships are emotional and alcoholism is an emotional disease and the first thing a newly sober person does when a little hiccup occurs, is to pick up a drink. It’s not the alcohol that cures the hiccups; it’s what the alcohol does to the emotions that will end up killing you. In early recovery, people are so needy that they’re likely to feel that anyone who smiles at them is Ms or Mr. Right. Your judgement right now is not reliable enough to use it to make important decisions. Later when your mind clears and you look back at those who seem attractive t you now, you will probably bless my “go slow” advice. I’ll be talking about relationships this month. “We cannot solve problems with the same thinking we had when we created the problems!” Albert Einstein About 20 years ago I read a book called The Mood Cure by Julia Ross and did a lot of research on the effectiveness of Tyrosine to help my patients with low dopamine levels. I have had some amazing results with patients telling me how wonderful they feel after a few short days taking this non-essential amino acid supplement. It assisted their concentration and motivation and helped to relieve a lot of mood swings caused by low dopamine levels. It also helped a lot of my patients to lose weight as the dopamine neurotransmitter is the centre for reward and satisfaction. Why do we overeat? We are always looking for a source of reward and satisfaction and often turn to food for comfort. Tyrosine can also assist to relieve emotional pain as we are often very sensitive people. Tyrosine Mood Food is necessary for the manufacture of dopamine and noradrenaline, which are required for concentration, alertness, memory and a happy stable mood. L-Glutamine is an amino acid and has been shown to improve brain function. Glutamine is the most abundant amino acid in the body and over 60% of your muscle tissue is comprised of glutamine. Strenuous exercise, viral and bacterial infections, inflammation, stress and trauma in general, can cause glutamine depletion that weakens the immune cells. Glutamine is vital for healthy intestinal function and may help with inflammation of the intestinal tract. It is also vital for muscle growth and healthy muscle function. People with Charcot’s Marie Tooth Disease (CMT) need Glutamine to strengthen their muscles.
