The progress of the disease called alcoholism is based upon the fact that the drinking of alcohol leads the alcoholic to experience feelings of euphoria, a state that is so pleasant, so rewarding, and so enjoyable, that the desire to experience the feeling is overwhelming.

The thing that marks off the rebound from alcoholic euphoria from the rebound experienced during normal euphoric states is the swing back past the zero point and into the pain area.

Here, feelings of distress are accompanied by actual physical pain caused by liver damage, hypertension, indigestion and the numerous other secondary diseases that are part of the primary disease of alcoholism.

In order to illustrate the difference between heavy drinkers and alcoholic drinkers is the lack of contact with the real world that persists even when the alcoholic is sober as opposed to the heavy drinker who is just that – a heavy drinker.

They get up in the morning and make their way to work with not so much as a mild hangover – if that. They don’t have the emotional turmoil going on in their head that persists in the alcoholic’s head.

In his or her chemically induced state of euphoria when the alcoholic is drunk, they are out of touch with reality. During this period things are said or done that hurt other people and cause them to dislike or feel sorry for the alcoholic.

The faint memory of these events poses a threat to the ego of the alcoholic, so the mechanisms of rationalization, projection, denial and repression unconsciously become very active, taking the alcoholic further out of touch with reality as the swing towards, and into the pain area occurs.

The physical damage caused by repeated excessive drinking begins to build up. Sleeping becomes difficult without a large dose of alcohol; pains in the chest and the stomach become a normal part of what rapidly becomes a semi-permanent state of distress.

The combination of actual distress caused by physical changes in the body and the knowledge, no matter how dimly felt, that their control over their lives is disintegrating, causes the massive drop in self-esteem.

These feelings do not disappear with time, so a wall of denial is erected to prevent the alcoholic from recognising the problem with any clarity and drinking is resumed.

L-Glutamine is an amino acid required for phase two detoxification in the liver and is required in increased amounts by those who consume excessive alcohol. It is able to reduce the craving for alcohol. l-Glutamine supplementation is helpful for intestinal disorders such as peptic ulcers and leaky gut syndrome. Leaky gut is the term used to describe an inflamed condition of the lining of the bowel, which makes the bowel too permeable, so that toxins and incompletely digested food particles can be absorbed from the bowels directly into the liver. This increases the workload of the liver and may cause many health problems. l-Glutamine is essential for the white cells to fight viruses such as hepatitis B and C. Glutamine is converted in the body into glutamic acid, which, along with the amino acids cysteine and glycine, is converted into the powerful liver protector glutathione. Glutathione is essential for liver phase two conjugation reactions used during detoxification of drugs and toxic chemicals.

LivaTone Plus contains a wide range of nutritional ingredients plus high dose St. Mary’s Thistle. It supports phase 1 and phase 2 detoxification pathways, ensuring optimum detoxification of many toxic substances. It also supports liver and gallbladder function and contains the full range of B vitamins. St. Mary’s Thistle has a tradition of use in Western herbal medicine as a liver tonic, to support healthy liver function. It protects liver cells. The liver is the main fat burning organ in the body and regulates fat and carbohydrate metabolism. A healthy liver will take fat in the form of cholesterol and pump it via the bile into the intestines where it will be carried away in the bowel actions provided the diet is high in fiber.

Tyrosine Mood Food - Tyrosine is a natural amino acid - one of the building blocks of protein.  It is required for the manufacture of the brain chemicals (neurotransmitters) dopamine and noradrenaline.  These neurotransmitters are required for concentration, alertness, memory and a happy, stable mood.

Magnesium – the great relaxer. Magnesium plays an essential role in maintaining and promoting efficient muscle function and nerve transmission. Magnesium is a vital mineral for hundreds of cellular enzymes involved in the body's energy production and metabolism. It is required by the nervous system to regulate the function of nerves and muscles. Magnesium may also assist in the reduction of stress, nervous tension, anxiety and sleeplessness.
