Recent research out of Australia has found that women with type 1 diabetes have a roughly 40% higher excess risk of all cause mortality, and double the excess risk of fatal and nonfatal vascular events (heart attacks and strokes) than men with type 1 diabetes. The researchers gathered data from 26 studies including 214,114 people. They found no evidence of a gender difference for mortality associated with type 1 diabetes from cancer, accidents or suicide. This is a surprising finding, as women are often more health conscious than men; they are more likely to maintain regular visits to their physician and often manage their health conditions with more compliance than men. It is a good reminder that type 1 diabetes is a very serious condition. High blood sugar is toxic to just about every organ and tissue in the body. Maintaining a blood sugar level as close as possible to normal is vitally important in managing this condition successfully. Source
