We know that high fiber and low GI foods are good for those with a fatty liver – because they lower insulin levels. But there is a new weapon available for those who wish to improve their metabolism of sugar - and it’s hot stuff! Yes it’s chilli, so we hope you like Asian and Mexican cuisine. Australian researchers found that 30 grams of cayenne chilli was able to reduce the rise in serum insulin after a meal. This beneficial effect was even greater in the subjects who were overweight, thus providing a tool for weight loss. The most likely explanation is that chilli influences the receptors on the liver cells enabling the excess insulin to be cleared more quickly.
If you don’t like chilli, you can use other herbs such as cinnamon and turmeric (found in curry powder) to lower blood sugar and insulin levels. This should help those with fatty liver, diabetes or Syndrome X to beat the battle of the bulge.
