Everyone suffers from insecurities and fears from time to time, but these do not have to be permanent. The emotion of fear can be something good, but it can also cripple people. Fear is a natural and unavoidable reaction, a safety measure - flight or fight.

It is our safety measuring stick and prompts us to act in the face of real danger – not imaginary.

The problem with fear is not the fear itself. The problem is the consequences of fear-based decisions and behaviours, especially subconscious fears that often don’t surface until something is falling apart or unbearable. Fear becomes abnormal when the fear is imaginary.

A practicing alcoholic is co-dependent and has abnormal insecurities and fears manifesting in:

  • Low self-esteem
  • Sensitivity
  • Depression
  • Aggressiveness
  • Restlessness
  • Irritability

Abnormal fears arise out of feelings of powerlessness in the past – a legacy of co-dependency. However, when we stop making the past our scapegoat for the present, we can begin to take charge of our future.

Alcohol addiction recovery can be helped by stepping back into the past and facing those unfounded fears that may be controlling you today.

Once you identify the bad feelings associated with unfounded fears from your past, whether they be fear of abandonment or fear of rejection, you  can  accept  them  for  what  they are – feelings from the past –  and  talk  about  them  with your counsellor or doctor. Once these fears are known and addressed, you have a good chance of staying motivated in your quest to win the battle of alcoholism.

Depression and co-dependency

Co-dependency is often accompanied by clinical depression, as the co-dependent person succumbs to feelings of frustration, irritability or sadness over his or her inability to improve the situation.

When you are feeling depressed, your thoughts are dominated by a pervasive negativity. You perceive not only yourself but also the entire world in dark, gloomy terms.

What is even worse – you’ll come to believe things really are as bad as you imagine them to be. If you are substantially depressed, you will even begin to believe that things always have been and always will be negative.

As you look into your past, you remember all the bad things that have happened to you. As you try to imagine the future, you see only emptiness or unending problems and anguish. This bleak vision creates a sense of hopelessness.

This feeling is absolutely illogical, but it seems so real that you have convinced yourself that your inadequacy will go on forever.

Your negative thoughts, which cause your emotional turmoil, nearly always contain gross distortions.

Although these thoughts appear valid, they are totally irrational or just plain wrong and that twisted thinking is a major cause of your suffering.

Every bad feeling you have is the result of your distorted negative thinking. Intense negative thinking always accompanies a painful emotion. The negative thoughts that flood your mind are the actual cause of your self-defeating emotions. These thoughts are what keep you lethargic and make you feel inadequate.

Every time you feel depressed about something, try to identify a corresponding negative thought you had just prior to and during the depressive episode.

In the meantime, try to live one day at a time. Listen to Joe Walsh from The Eagles sing One Day at a Time. Joe has about 20 years of sobriety.

You might like to help your liver recover with the following suggested products.

LivaTone Plus:

  • is a more powerful formula that can support liver function when there are more chronic liver problems.
  • combines the proven doses of St Mary’s Thistle with the benefits of Turmeric and Selenium. It also contains all the B vitamins and the amino acid Taurine as well as the antioxidant vitamins C and E.

L-Glutamine, which can be found in my Ultimate Gut Health Powder, can help support efficient brain function along with Tyrosine Mood Food as Tyrosine is necessary for the manufacture of dopamine and noradrenaline, which are required for concentration, alertness, memory and a happy stable mood.

Magnesium is known as The Great Relaxer and may assist in the reduction of stress, nervous tension, anxiety and sleeplessness.

Blues Free is designed to support a better mood. Hydroxytryptophan is needed by the brain to make Serotonin which is the natural happy chemical produced by brain cells and has a controlling effect upon mood and feelings, appetite, sleep, confidence and mental energy.

Sleep Eze is another useful sleep enhancer and I use it myself.  Melatonin is best taken at night when the pineal gland is meant to secrete its own melatonin to promote a natural restful sleep and awake refreshed in the morning without that “sleeping tablet hangover”.   I like it because it is not addictive.

Adrenal Plus Support:  If you support the function of your adrenal glands, you have more chance coping with the everyday pressures of life. Many people suffer with morning fatigue and depression due to sluggish function of the adrenal glands. The adrenal glands are 2 small glands that are situated just above the kidneys and when they are working efficiently, they produce extra surges of energising hormones such as cortisol, adrenalin and DHEA to help you face the challenges of the new day. In other words, the adrenal gland hormones increase your resistance to stress and provide the drive and energy to succeed.
