Berberine is a powerful herbal extract. It is well known for helping diabetics to achieve better blood sugar control. It also has metabolism benefits and makes weight loss easier and faster. Recent research has shown that berberine protects the liver from inflammation. In this way it reduces scarring and can help reduce the risk of cirrhosis.

If you have a fatty liver it means there is inflammation and damage occurring to your liver cells. In time, the chronic inflammation can lead to the development of scar tissue. Berberine helps prevent the progression from fatty liver to cirrhosis of the liver.

Berberine is a natural plant extract, found in several different herbs. Examples include goldenseal, barberry, oregon grape, and phellodendron. It has a long tradition of use in Chinese and Ayurvedic Herbal Medicine. It is naturally yellow in color.

A recent article published in the journal Scientific Reports has shown berberine has remarkable liver-protective properties. Earlier studies have shown that berberine helps in the treatment of obesity, high blood sugar, and high cholesterol; its liver benefits had not been fully explored until recently. The study showed that berberine reduces the risk of fat accumulating in the liver in the first place, reduces the degree of inflammation inside the liver and makes it less likely that cirrhosis (scarring) will develop.

Fatty liver disease is an epidemic. Approximately one in five Americans has a fatty liver, whether they know it or not. Having a fatty liver is bad for your health and will make you feel unwell because the fat impedes the liver’s ability to function properly. The real danger though, lies in the potential for fatty liver to progress to cirrhosis of the liver. Cirrhosis occurs when there is a large amount of scar tissue (fibrosis) inside the liver. This recent study showed that berberine significantly reduced liver inflammation, fibrosis, and lipid peroxides (oxidation of fat within the liver). If you have a fatty liver or cirrhosis, you may wish to consider taking a berberine supplement to protect your liver.

Other strategies for reducing liver inflammation

Provide your liver with the nutrients and antioxidants it needs for efficient detoxification. Your liver cells can actually get damaged while they break down toxins in order to remove them from your body. Livatone Plus contains the nutrients your liver requires for detoxification. It also contains herbs and nutrients that can repair damaged and inflamed liver cells.

The mineral selenium has an anti-inflammatory effect.  Your body needs it for glutathione production as well as fighting viruses. Selenomune Designer Energy capsules  are an excellent source of selenium and other immune boosting nutrients.

Serrapeptase is a natural enzyme that helps to clean up cellular debris in your body and may reduce the presence of scar tissue.

Keep your blood sugar in the healthy range.  High blood sugar activates the immune system in a destructive way.  Diabetics are at high risk of fatty liver and cirrhosis even if they don’t drink any alcohol and are not overweight. If you have diabetes, follow the eating plan in our book Diabetes Type 2: you can Reverse it Naturally.

Make sure you are eating sufficient satiating food. Many of my overweight patients with a fatty liver eat very little food, but all the wrong food. Protein, vegetables and natural fats are the most important foods to include in your diet. It’s important to eat enough food early in the day, to prevent excessive hunger and cravings in the evening. I recommend you base your diet on animal protein such as seafood, eggs, poultry and red meat, and combine them with non starchy vegetables and natural fats.
