Some types of tumors are particularly fuelled by sugar. Eating too much sugar can speed up tumor growth and worsen prognosis. This research comes from the University of Texas, Dallas and was published in the journal Nature Communications. Here is a very interesting statement from the lead researcher: "It has been suspected that many cancer cells are heavily dependent on sugar as their energy supply, but it turns out that one specific type -- squamous cell carcinoma is remarkably more dependent”. Squamous cell carcinoma can be found in the lungs, head, neck, esophagus and cervix. This research first came about because the researchers wanted to investigate the differences in metabolism between the two main types of non-small cell lung cancer: adenocarcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. Approximately one quarter of all lung cancers are squamous cell carcinoma, which is usually difficult to treat. Regardless of where it is found in the body, squamous cell carcinomas use higher levels of a protein that carries glucose into cells, enabling them to multiply. The researchers are hoping to target this protein in future drugs developed for the treatment of cancer. However, a new drug would be many years away, and there’s no guarantee it would be safe or effective. Keeping your diet low in sugar may be the most effective way of reducing your cancer risk and improving prognosis if you have been diagnosed. Here is a final statement from the lead researcher: "As a culture, we are very addicted to sugar. Excessive sugar consumption is not only a problem that can lead to complications like diabetes, but also, based on our studies and others, the evidence is mounting that some cancers are also highly dependent on sugar. We'd like to know from a scientific standpoint whether we might be able to affect cancer progression with dietary changes”. Sugar addiction can feel impossible to overcome. It is definitely challenging. Fortunately there are many strategies. I’ve found to be effective in most of my patients. The most effective ones are Glicemic Balance capsules, for stabilizing blood sugar, and magnesium for reducing anxiety, tension and improving sleep quality. Reference
