Kimberley is a 60 year old lady who came to see me recently. Kimberley had been diagnosed with a fatty liver by her doctor and also had high triglycerides, cholesterol level in the upper normal limit and a uric acid level which was also on the higher side of normal.

Kimberley’s liver enzyme counts have been raised for the past 10 years. They were only slightly above normal, so each time her blood test results came back, her doctor told her not to worry about them. Kimberley’s blood sugar and insulin levels were also both on the higher side of normal and her doctor indicated to her that she was pre-diabetic.

Kimberley knew about these results for several years but didn’t feel motivated to do anything about them. She worked as a medical receptionist 3 days a week and she spent the remaining days of the week resting and recovering from work. She became easily fatigued and didn’t have the energy to exercise.

It was not until Kimberley entered into a new relationship that she began taking her health seriously. Her new partner noticed a prescription for a blood pressure tablet that Kimberley had never got filled. She didn’t want to take the medication and thought she’d just work on reducing her stress levels instead. Both of Kimberley’s parents suffered with high blood pressure, and her mother died from a stroke. Kimberley’s new partner pressured her into taking the medication and making an appointment with me.

My recommendations for my patient:

  • I sent Kimberley off for an ultrasound scan of her liver, which revealed a fatty liver. Taken together with high blood pressure and her blood test results, these finding clearly indicated that Kimberley was insulin resistant. I asked her to follow the eating plan in the book Fatty Liver: You Can Reverse It. I encouraged Kimberley to base her diet on protein, vegetables and natural fats. She had already started to make the transition to this way of eating, from the encouragement she received from her new boyfriend.
  • Magnesium is extremely calming and relaxing. I asked Kimberley to take one teaspoon each day with her dinner. It helps improve stress coping abilities and also helps to lower elevated blood pressure.
  • My liver tonic Livatone Plus would help to clear the fat from her liver and normalize elevated liver enzymes much faster than diet changes alone. A liver that is fatty and inflamed causes fatigue. My liver tonic improves energy levels and this helps improve motivation for self care.
  • Sugar cravings were a real problem for Kimberley, especially around 3 or 4 pm. She felt like some days she couldn’t make it through the day without some chocolate. I asked her to take one Glicemic Balance capsule with each meal. The herbs and nutrients in this formulation help to balance and stabilize blood sugar throughout the day. This significantly reduces cravings for sugar and other high carbohydrate foods.

I plan to see Kimberley again in 5 weeks.
