Hiliary is a 39 year old lady who came to my clinic seeking help for a recent scleroderma diagnosis, and fatty liver. Hiliary has known she has a fatty liver for the past 3 years. She only found out about the scleroderma a month ago. Scleroderma causes thickening and hardening of some connective tissue in the body. It’s most common on the hands and face and these are the places it affected Hiliary.

The scleroderma symptoms were quite mild, but Hiliary had done some reading and she was scared about where the disease could progress. A friend of hers knew someone with scleroderma of the lungs, which was a very serious disease. Hiliary was scared about her future health and wanted some natural remedies to resolve her current issues.

Hiliary confessed that she ate sugar when she felt overwhelmed by the stress in her life. She was a single mother to 2 children and had 2 dogs to look after. Hiliary had a demanding job that left her depleted at the end of the day. She had poor quality sleep and said that meant she often felt more tired in the morning than the night before. Hiliary was able to temporarily reverse her fatty liver in the past by improving her eating habits, but stress got in the way and now the fatty liver is back.

Hiliary wasn’t taking any medication. Her doctor just wanted to monitor the scleroderma, since it was currently mild and not impairing her quality of life. Hiliary took an iron supplement and a multi vitamin when she remembered.

My recommendations for my patient

  • I asked Hiliary to base her diet on protein, natural fats and vegetables. Her meals were often too small. That meant she wasn’t properly satiated and constantly temped by sweet treats. I asked her to follow the eating plan in the book Fatty Liver: You Can Reserve It.
  •  I gave her Glicemic Balance capsules to help reduce cravings. Hiliary knew what she was supposed to eat but often found her cravings overwhelming. Glicemic Balance capsules would make it easier.
  • The inflammation in Hiliary’s body was being caused by her immune system, therefore this needed addressing. I gave Hiliary a selenium supplement because it is wonderful for reducing inflammation. Selenium is required by the body for the production of glutathione, which is the body’s detoxifier and it also reduces inflammation. I also gave her n-acetyl cysteine (NAC) because it’s needed for glutathione production and glutathione is the ultimate detoxifier and anti inflammatory molecule. .
  •  Scleroderma is an autoimmune disease, thus it was important to avoid gluten, dairy products and sugar. Healing leaky gut and correcting dysbiosis are necessary when treating autoimmune disease. I asked Hiliary to follow the diet guidelines in our book Healing Autoimmune Disease: A plan to help your immune system and reduce inflammation.
  • Fatty liver often doesn’t cause any symptoms at all, so a person often doesn’t know they have one. In Hiliary’s case it caused fatigue and nausea and poor quality sleep. A fatty liver can cause frequent waking at night and over heating at night. I asked her to take 2 capsules twice daily of Livatone Plus.

Hiliary is due to return for another appointment in five weeks.
