Cooling down the inflammation in your body can help improve your emotional wellbeing. Depression or anxiety can be symptoms of an immune system problem. Helping the immune system can improve mental health.

The traditional theory of depression is that people who are depressed have a deficiency of neurotransmitters such as serotonin, dopamine and norephinephrine in their brain. Interestingly, growing evidence suggests that at least some types of depression are fuelled by ongoing low-grade inflammation in the body.

Inflammation is your body’s response to injury, infection, allergies, stress or chronic disease. A certain level of inflammation is necessary and helpful, in order for your body to overcome these conditions. Problems arise when the inflammation becomes excessive or continues for too long.

Chronic, low-grade inflammation greatly contributes to fatigue, pain, low mood and an inability to lose weight. The symptoms of a great variety of health conditions are aggravated by excessive inflammation.  It is also thought that long term high levels of inflammation in your body speed up the aging process and increase your risk of heart attacks, strokes and cancer. Inflammation basically causes wear and tear inside your body; it wears your body out more quickly.

Studies have shown that depressed people have higher levels of inflammatory chemicals such as C-reactive protein and cytokines in their bodies compared to people who are not depressed. When people are given proinflammatory cytokines, they typically experience more symptoms of depression and anxiety. Even brain imaging scans of people with depression show that their brain has increased neuroinflammation. Think about when you have a cold or flu. Your body is in an inflammatory state then. You probably experience symptoms typical of depression, such as disturbed sleep, a depressed mood, fatigue, poor concentration and a foggy head.

A  study published in The Journal of Clinical Psychiatry looked at data from 14,275 people who were interviewed between 2007 and 2012 to check for depression. They also had blood tests. The researchers found that people who suffered with depression had 46 percent higher levels of C-reactive protein in their blood. This is a chemical your body produces when it is inflamed. It is produced in your liver. People with a fatty liver, inflamed liver or sluggish liver suffer with more inflammation. Correcting these conditions with the liver tonic Livatone Plus is an important component of the solution to better mental health.

How else can you lower inflammation? Well, it’s important to find the source and address it. This can be tricky and take some time. Serrapeptase is a natural enzyme that reduces inflammation by cleaning up debris in your body. It helps to provide relief from the varied symptoms of inflammation. Here are some additional tips to help you. For more information about depression see my book Help for Depression and Anxiety.
