Your adrenal glands are two tiny organs that sit on top of your kidneys. They control quite a lot of important functions in your body. Healthy adrenal glands help to manage your stress response; they help you maintain a healthy weight; they keep your blood sugar and blood pressure in range, and also regulate the health of your immune system.

Their most important function is assisting your body to cope with stress. That’s an important job in today’s stressful world. The soft center of the adrenal glands is called the adrenal medulla and it manufactures adrenalin from the amino acid tyrosine. The medulla secretes adrenalin into the blood stream where it is carried to all parts of the body.

The adrenal cortex is quite different tissue to the adrenal medulla and manufactures steroid hormones from cholesterol. The cortex turns cholesterol into the hormone pregnenolone, which is then turned into cortisol, DHEA and aldosterone. Cortisol reduces inflammation that is produced by free radicals in the body and DHEA gives you strength and stamina.

The adrenal glands are very high in fat, and this is a good thing. Many of your hormones are made of fat. Unfortunately fat is easily oxidized by free radicals; thus your adrenal glands are vulnerable to damage from many causes. I call our adrenal glands our “survival glands” and we need to support them if we want an energetic, healthy and happy life.

Too much stress can lead to adrenal fatigue

Your adrenal glands act like shock absorbers for your body. They help you to bounce back from life’s constant stressors. If you are under too much stress, or the stress never goes away, eventually your adrenals get tired of working overtime. Then you can experience what is known as adrenal fatigue. You can feel extremely tired all the time; sleep can be unrefreshing; you can’t fight off colds as well, and are less resilient to life’s hurdles. It’s not just emotional stress that can create adrenal gland exhaustion. Illness, accidents, injuries and surgery are all physically very stressful to your body.

An example of this severity is the story of Natalina, a patient who had spent 12 years battling with her health, seeing numerous doctors and specialists before she reached out to Dr Cabot in complete desperation. Natalina previously received a Hashimotos diagnosis, experienced severe abdominal pains, chronic fatigue, underwent gallbladder removal surgery, had several mild strokes, and experienced autoimmune/inflammation symptoms to name a few! In March of 2021, Dr Cabot met with Natalina at her clinic and quickly organized several blood tests for Natalina. Within hours, Dr Cabot made the incredibly shocking and urgent discovery that Natalina's adrenal glands had failed and was close to an adrenal crisis, which can be fatal.

How to boost the health of your adrenal glands

  • Stress and anxiety are the biggest enemies of your adrenal glands. Stress is sometimes unavoidable, and sometimes we are stuck in a very difficult situation in life. However, long term stress is very destructive to your health and it is vital to find ways to manage it. Exercise, meditation and counselling are all effective ways some people manage stress. If anxiety is an issue for you, you may find help in my book Help for Anxiety and Depression.
  • Adrenal Natural Glandular capsules help to support your body’s production of hormones. The adrenal gland tissue is derived from government-inspected, range-fed beef, raised in New Zealand and Australia. If your adrenal glands are not producing sufficient hormones, these capsules can help to give you more energy and stamina.
  • Your adrenal glands are heavily reliant on vitamin C. Most of the vitamin C in your body actually gets stored there. Even if you eat lots of fruit and vegetables, it can be difficult to ingest sufficient vitamin C if you’re living with chronic stress. A vitamin C supplement can make a world of difference for you.
  • Stress can make you more prone to viral infections. Many people don’t get enough selenium in their diet, and this makes it harder for the body to fight viruses. Selenomune Designer Energy capsules contain powerful nutrients that help your body fight infections, while boosting your energy level.
  • Tyrosine is an amino acid that can help you manage your stress more easily. Your brain uses this amino acid to produce the neurotransmitters dopamine and noradrenalin. They are required for good concentration, good mood, motivation and stress coping abilities. Tyrosine can help you feel less stressed; therefore less pressure will be placed on your adrenal glands.
  • Magnesium has a reputation for being “the great relaxer” because it really is. It helps to relax your muscles and nervous system, helping you to wind down. It may also help you keep a level head and not over react to stressful situations during the day.
