If there was ever a reason to kick a sugar addiction, surely this is it! After nine years of research, molecular biologists in Belgium have concluded that sugar encourages tumor growth. The finding was published in the journal Nature Communications. Most healthy cells in your body get their energy via a process called aerobic respiration. This involves breaking down the food you’ve eaten into energy rich molecules in a process that requires oxygen, and releasing carbon dioxide as a waste product. This doesn’t happen in most cancer cells. Even when plenty of oxygen is available, cancerous cells prefer getting energy by fermenting sugar. This phenomenon is known as the ‘Warburg effect’. The fermentation process stimulates tumor growth. These research findings have shown that the most common cancer-causing genes (called Ras proteins) stimulate aggressive tumors with their high sugar consumption. The researchers have said that sugar can awaken existing cancer cells; making them multiply and spread more rapidly. Lead study author and Belgian molecular biologist Johan Thevelein has said: “The hyperactive sugar consumption of cancerous cells leads to a vicious cycle of continued stimulation of cancer development and growth”.
