There are 10 Toxic Beliefs at the basis of any alcoholic or drug addict’s “stinking thinking” Liver-Doctor-Recovery-From-Alcoholism Working with alcoholics and drug addicts over the years I have found that fear is the basis of their toxic belief system. Fear of not getting what they want and fear of losing something they have, sets any alcoholic or drug addict up with mental health issues. Their thinking is “stinking thinking” and they are in a continual state of mental disturbance and frustration.  More than 50% of alcoholics and drug addicts have specific mental health issues like Bipolar 2 or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, a legacy of growing up in a dysfunctional environment or  severe trauma experienced during their life. PTSD is often followed by the Cluster B group of Personality Disorders. Not too many General Practitioners are aware of the symptoms and Bipolar 2 often takes up to 12 years to diagnose.  The victim doesn’t know himself and keeps blaming other people, places, things and situations for their chronic malcontented view of life. I find the Cluster B group prevalent in many alcoholics and drug addicts and they continue harboring these symptoms by self-medicating. The Antisocial Personality is characterized by a pervasive pattern of disregard for the rights of other people that often manifests as hostility and/or aggression. The Histrionic Personality is characterized by a pattern of excessive emotional attention seeking activities. The Narcissistic Personality of an alcoholic or drug addict has significant problems with their sense of self-worth stemming from a powerful sense of entitlement. The Borderline Personality Disorder displays erratic emotions and has a hard time calming down once they have been upset. As a result, they frequently have angry outbursts and engage in impulsive behaviors such as substance abuse, overspending or binge eating. They drink, drug and overeat to sooth them in the short-term but ultimately, they harm themselves in the longer term. Ten key toxic beliefs by the alcoholic, drug addict, binge eater or any addiction whether it is ingested or behavioral: 1.    Abandonment/Instability – the believe that significant people in their life are unstable or unreliable 2.    Mistrust/Abuse – the expectation that they will be harmed through abuse or neglect 3.    Emotional Deprivation – the expectation that the need for emotional support will not be met a.    Deprivation of nurturance – the absence of attention b.    Deprivation of empathy – the absence of understanding c.    Deprivation of protection – the absence of guidance 4.    Defectiveness/Shame – the belief that one is defective, inferior or unlovable. 5.    Social Isolation/Alienation – the belief the one does not belong to a group, is isolated or different from others. 6.    Dependence – the belief that one is incompetent or helpless and requires significant assistance from others and/or the belief that one cannot survive without another. 7.    Failure- the belief that one is inadequate and will ultimately fail 8.    Entitlement/Grandiosity – the belief that one deserves privileges and is superior to others 9.    Self-sacrifice/Subjection – voluntarily meeting the needs of others at the expense of one’s own gratification or submitting to others to avoid consequences and surrendering control to others due to real or perceived coercion (subjugation of needs involves suppressing one’s own desires to preferences; subjugation of emotions involves the suppression of emotions, particularly anger) 10.    Unrelenting Standards/Hyper criticalness – the belief that one must meet a very high internalized standard to avoid the criticism of others; it involves impairment in the areas of pleasure, health and satisfying relationships. I recommend amino acids to help balance brain chemistry and a good liver tonic to help repair liver damage. Specific amino acids are essential for the liver to breakdown toxins and drugs and also for efficient metabolism in the liver. L-Glutamine – This amino acid is required for phase two detoxification in the liver and is required in increased amounts by those who consume excessive alcohol. It is able to reduce the craving for alcohol. Glutamine supplementation is helpful for intestinal disorders such as peptic ulcers and leaky gut syndrome. Leaky gut is the term used to describe an inflamed condition of the lining of the bowel, which makes the bowel too permeable, so that toxins and incompletely digested food particles can be absorbed from the bowels directly into the liver. This increases the workload of the liver and may cause many health problems. Glutamine is essential for the white cells to fight viruses such as hepatitis B and C. Glutamine is converted in the body into glutamic acid, which, along with the amino acids N-Acetyl-Cysteine and glycine, is converted into the powerful liver protector glutathione. Glutathione is essential for liver phase two conjugation reactions used during detoxification of drugs and toxic chemicals. Glutamine is found in our Ultimate Gut Health. Livatone is a natural liver tonic containing the liver herbs St Mary’s Thistle, Globe Artichoke and Dandelion, combined with the amino acid Taurine, and Lecithin. It also contains natural sources of Chlorophyll, Carotenoids and fiber. It is available in both capsule and powder form. The liver is the main fat burning organ in the body and regulates fat and carbohydrate metabolism. A healthy liver will take fat in the form of cholesterol and pump it via the bile into the intestines where it will be carried away in the bowel actions provided the diet is high in fiber. Tyrosine Mood Food – Tyrosine is a natural amino acid – one of the building blocks of protein.  It is required for the manufacture of the brain chemicals (neurotransmitters) dopamine and noradrenaline.  These neurotransmitters are required for concentration, alertness, memory and a happy, stable mood. Magnesium – the great relaxer. Magnesium plays an essential role in maintaining and promoting efficient muscle function and nerve transmission. Magnesium is a vital mineral for hundreds of cellular enzymes involved in the body’s energy production and metabolism. It is required by the nervous system to regulate the function of nerves and muscles. Magnesium may also assist in the reduction of stress, nervous tension, anxiety and sleeplessness.
