Warts are small rough non-cancerous skin growths caused by a common viral infection in humans – human papillomavirous (HPV) - affecting all age groups. Warts can be a nuisance, and can be painful, itchy and/or bleed when knocked. There are over 100 different types of HPV viruses. For example:
- Plantar warts, usually found on the soles of the feet making it uncomfortable for walking.
- Common warts, mostly found on hands, fingers and feet.
- Flat warts, usually found on the face and back of the hands and have flat tops.
- Genital warts, found on the external genitalia and are contagious.
Treatment will depend on where the wart is. There are over-the-counter products containing salicylic acid and silver nitrate. Doctors may burn the wart off, freeze the wart with liquid nitrogen to destroy the tissue, or use laser treatment.
What about nutrition?
The risk of getting warts may be increased if your immune system is compromised. So it is important to look at nutrition and supplementation, such as selenium, which may help improve immune function, reducing recurrence of the virus. Download my free e-book 'Selenium - The Great Protector'. For more information on selenium deficiency, see Vitamin and Mineral Deficiency in our A-Z medical guide.
Aim for a diet higher in fresh raw fruits and vegetables. Avoid all processed and fried fatty foods and try to limit alcohol. Eat organic where possible. For more information on healthy eating, see the vital healthy eating principles in "The Liver Cleansing Diet" book. These principles you can follow for life.
How long do warts last?
Warts may disappear without treatment. They can also last anywhere from weeks, months to even years, and once disappeared, can even reoccur if the virus isn’t completely removed from the skin.
Daily raw juicing of fruit and vegetables is encouraged. See the book "Raw Juices Can Save Your Life" for immune-enhancing recipes and immune booster smoothies, like the one below:
