Insulin is a hormone most people think of in terms of blood sugar and diabetes. Did you know it also has growth promoting properties? That’s good if you’re a teenager and going through a growth spurt but not at all good if you’ve been diagnosed with cancer.

Research has shown that a high blood insulin level correlates with poorer prognosis for women with metastatic breast cancer. This is important to know because insulin can be lowered, and this improves chances of survival.

This finding comes from research presented at the Advanced Breast Cancer Third International Consensus Conference on Nov. 6, 2015. It has been known for a long time that women with type 2 diabetes are more likely to develop breast cancer. Both high blood sugar and high blood insulin are known to promote the growth and spread of tumors. Now studies have shown that you don’t have to be a diabetic to be at higher risk – women with normal blood sugar but high insulin are also in danger.

People with elevated blood insulin are known to have insulin resistance or metabolic syndrome. You can ask your doctor for a blood test to check your insulin level. This is a fasting test. An ideal level is 3 or 4. Clues that you might have elevated insulin include being a type 2 diabetic, having polycystic ovarian syndrome, a fatty liver, or carrying excess fat around your waist.

Strategies to increase breast cancer survival:

  • Avoid excess alcohol intake. Alcohol inflames the liver and impairs its ability to manufacture glutathione. Glutathione is your body’s own powerful detoxifier and antioxidant. Taking n-acetyl cysteine (NAC) in supplement form helps raise blood glutathione levels.
  • Include plenty of antioxidant rich foods in your diet, such as raw vegetables and their juices and green tea.
  • Keep your weight in the healthy range and exercise regularly. If losing weight is a challenge for you, see my new book I Can’t Lose Weight and I don’t Know Why. The easiest way to lose weight is to cut sugar out of your diet. You may suffer with withdrawals and cravings for a few weeks, but after that time period it becomes much easier to avoid sugar. Glicemic Balance capsules are excellent for stabilizing blood sugar and thus helping you avoid cravings.
  • Minimize your exposure to toxic chemicals (such as pesticides, insecticides, solvents, glues, dyes, etc.) and avoid heating food in plastic containers or plastic wraps. Don’t drink hot beverages from styrofoam cups. Install a water filter in your home.
  • Ensure you receive enough of the nutrients vital for supporting healthy breast tissue – these are vitamin D, iodine and selenium. They are combined in Breast Health capsules.
