Things you must know if you don’t have a gallbladder
Removal of the gallbladder is one of the most common surgeries performed in the USA and Australia today. Gallstones are incredibly common and they occur in 10 to 15 percent of the population. The problem does tend to run in families. Women are more likely to experience gallbladder problems than men and this is partly due to the effects of the female hormone estrogen.
A gallbladder performs several important roles in your body:
- Enables fat digestion
- Enables absorption of fat soluble antioxidants and vitamins A, E, D and K
- Assists the removal of cholesterol from your body
- Assists the removal of toxins that have been broken down by the liver
What happens when you don’t have a gallbladder?
Your liver continues to manufacture bile, but there is no longer a place to store it or concentrate it. Therefore bile continually slowly trickles into the intestines. If you eat a fatty meal, you will not be able to secrete a large enough amount of bile into your intestines, therefore the fat will be poorly digested. This means many people experience diarrhea, bloating, nausea or indigestion. Not digesting fat well means you will not be able to digest essential fatty acids, including omega 3 and omega 6 fats. It also means you’ll have a hard time absorbing fat soluble vitamins such as vitamins D, E, A and K. A lot of the antioxidants in vegetables are fat soluble: lycopene, lutein and carotenoids are all fat soluble. If you don’t produce adequate bile, you will not be adequately absorbing these life saving compounds from foods. If you take any of the above mentioned nutrients in supplement form, without sufficient bile you will sadly not absorb them well. Some common symptoms of poor fat digestion are dry, brittle hair; dry skin and premature aging of the skin; weak nails and painful joints. Essential fatty acids are important for optimal brain health, therefore low mood, anxiety, depression and impaired cognitive function are all possible manifestations of poor fat digestion. How to have a healthy liver and good digestion without a gallbladder
First of all it’s important to realise that you developed a gallbladder problem in the first place because you had an unhealthy liver and a problem with your digestive system. If your liver is not healthy, it will make poor quality bile. The bile will be prone to forming sludge and stones. Just removing the gallbladder doesn’t solve that problem, and in fact sludge and stones can form within the liver, compromising its function. Here are some vital tips to follow:
- Keep your intake of dairy products and grains to a minimum or avoid them altogether. Dairy products (milk, cheese, ice-cream, yoghurt) worsen all cases of gallbladder disease, liver disease and they are very difficult to digest. Food intolerance is a common cause of gallbladder problems, and there is research that links gluten intolerance with gallstones. A good reason to keep your intake of grains low is to reduce the risk of developing a fatty liver. There is a great deal of helpful information in our book Save your Gallbladder, and what to do if you've already lost it.
- Take a good quality liver tonic such as Livatone. The herbs St Mary’s thistle, dandelion root and globe artichoke leaves all increase bile production and bile flow. Taurine is an amino acid necessary for bile production. This should help to make you feel more comfortable after a meal, and should reduce the risk of stones forming inside your liver.
- Take an ox bile supplement. This is the most important recommendation for people who have lost their gallbladder. A lack of bile can produce symptoms such as bloating and indigestion after meals, light colored stools, diarrhea, fatigue after meals and nutrient deficiencies. Taking a good quality ox bile supplement with each meal is wonderful for completely eliminating these symptoms in most individuals.
- Take a Digestive Enzymes supplement. The majority of people who developed a gallbladder problem have suffered with poor digestion for many years. If your stomach and intestines are not in optimal health, they will not send signals to your gallbladder, telling it to contract properly. Irritable bowel syndrome, dysbiosis, small intestinal bacterial overgrowth and Candida overgrowth are common in people with a gallbladder problem. If you have had your gallbladder removed, you may continue to suffer symptoms due to those conditions. These digestive problems also cause insufficient digestive enzyme production. Taking digestive enzymes in supplement form helps to restore good digestive health and reduces symptoms of indigestion.
- Eat some good fats and avoid the bad fats. Your doctor may have recommended you follow a low fat diet after having your gallbladder removed. This is not necessary and in fact it is harmful. Your body desperately needs good fats and I recommend you include moderate quantities of extra virgin olive oil, avocados, coconut milk and oil, nuts and seeds in your diet.
- You may need a vitamin D3 supplement. People with compromised liver or digestive function are often vitamin D deficient. Exposure of your skin to the sun’s UVB rays enables your body to manufacture vitamin D. However, this process occurs in your liver and kidneys. People with a sluggish liver often do not manufacture vitamin D adequately. Therefore it’s a good idea to get a blood test and take a supplement. 5000 IU of vitamin D3 is a safe and effective dose for most people, but it’s best to be guided by your own doctor.
- Include some bitter and sour foods in your diet. They should help to improve your digestion and make it easier to tolerate good fats in your diet. Suitable bitter and sour foods include lemons, limes, radicchio lettuce, chicory, endive and dandelion leaves. These leaves are fairly easy to grow at home if you are lucky enough to have your own veggie patch.

I have a very strange pain under my right side rib cage, sometimes just around the front, and sometimes it spreads almost to the back. The strangest thing is that the pain starts every day at the same time, around 1PM and continues for 2 - 3 hours. CT scan didn't show any abnormalities, except for fatty liver. BTW, my gallbladder was removed about 18 - 20 years ago. The pain started about 5 - 6 months ago, when I started voluntarily loose weight, just reducing amount of consumed food and avoiding sweets. For last 5.5 months I lost 60lb, from 345lb to 285lb.
Any opinion, advice?
Thanks.
I really don't know how much more I can take.
I'm thinking of have them go back in and check for scar tissue or maybe a nerve was damaged. I don't know but I can't take it after any more.
We recommend you avoid grains, dairy and processed foods.
Dr Cabot recommends
Ox Bile 1 - 2 caps three times daily in the middle of meals, this will replace the bile that can no longer come from the gallbladder for essential fat absorption.
Livatone Plus 2 caps twice daily to improve liver function.
We suggest you follow a diet based on fresh fruits and vegetables, good protein sources such as lean meat, poultry and seafood, and good fat sources such as avocado, nuts, seeds and seafood.
If you follow these guidelines your symptoms will improve.

Fatty liver can cause upper right quadrant pain, although there may be other causes. The fact that it starts at the same time every day is interesting – it could be related to digestive issues and diet. Digestion will be compromised as the gall bladder was removed. The weight loss is quite significant, but not too surprising with the change in diet. I recommend you follow the advice in Dr Cabot’s books on the Gallbladder and ‘Fatty Liver – You can Reverse It’. Take LivaTone Plus 2 capsules twice daily, NAC 1 capsule 2 to 3 times a day, ½ hour before food. Vitamin C and MSM powder 1 tspn daily and Ox Bile in the middle of meals and raw juicing.
How long ago was the CT scan? It would be advisable to see your GP for further testing to exclude the possibility of anything more serious.

Sorry for the delayed response.
Sphincter of Oddi Dysfunction refers to the inability of the Sphincter of Oddi (the smooth muscle that surrounds the end portion of the common bile duct and pancreatic duct) to contract and relax in a normal fashion. This may cause obstruction of bile flow resulting in biliary pain and obstruction to the flow of pancreatic juice, which can lead to pancreatitis.
The cause of Sphincter of Oddi Dysfunction is unknown, however one of the current theories is the presence of microscopic stones in the bile and duodenal inflammation.
The recommendations would still be the same, with the objective of dissolving any microscopic stones and ensuring that bile is healthy and inflammation is reduced. A magnesium supplement, such as Magnesium Complete may be helpful in relieving and preventing spasms of the sphincter.
For more information and orthodox treatment, have a look athttp://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/gastroenterology_hepatology/diseases_conditions/faqs/sphincter_oddi_dysfunction.html

We recommend you have another ultrasound to determine the cause of the pain, because it may be caused by many things.
Your symptoms certainly seem to be liver oriented and we would expect pain to be under the right breast if it is solely the liver.
After gallbladder removal, it becomes difficult to absorb dietary fats because there is not the amount of bile being delivered into the digestive tract to emulsify them.
Without bile, liver metabolites are not able to be removed from the body efficiently and this leads to increased inflammation.
Ox Bile capsules – 1 - 2 capsules at the beginning of each meal to replace the bile that can no longer be delivered from your gallbladder to help essential fat absorption.
Livatone Plus – 2 capsules twice daily, to improve liver function.
N-Acetyl-Cysteine (NAC 600mg) – 2 capsules twice daily well away from food, if any upset occurs take at the beginning of your meals. This supplement works well with Livatone Plus to get your liver better faster. This supplement hastens liver healing. This supplement is the precursor nutrient of glutathione; the body’s strongest anti-oxidant.
Berberine – 1 capsule three times daily. To balance blood glucose, lower cholesterol and triglycerides, reduce anxiety, alleviate depression, and support a healthy intestinal flora.

I have since put on a bit of weight and have the odd discomfort in the liver area but I find digestive enzymes stop the bloating which is a horrible and sometimes embarrassing affliction. I am nearly 80.
There are worse things out there in the bad health world than having gall bladder problems so think positive. These days there are medicines and better help available which never existed in days gone by. We are lucky.
I have pain mainly under and in my left side of my ribs and rib cage which can go into my back, I feel quite sick and drained an awful lot. I have constant diarehoa to which extent my medication does not seem to work to stop this.
My stomach is constantly noisy and churning all the time feels like an errupting volcano.
I would appreciate it if someone could recommend something to settle this as I would atleast like to feel better from this as I already have Mulitiple Sclerosis and IBS which is bad enough.
Many thanks
Sylvia Hams
I still have the noises in my guts, he says it's normal.
I would also go have it checked out as a precaution.
Your symptoms sound like what I was dealing with when I was diagnosed with pancreatitis. Please go see your doctor.
Best wishes!
Jes
Have you had a scan of your internal organs to check where the pain is coming from?
Have you had a feces test to check for parasites?
Eliminating gluten, dairy products and sugar from your diet would probably help your digestion.

I'm sorry, but the above quote is not entirely accurate and needs to be updated please.
Scientists aren't entirely sure why gallstones even develop, AT ALL. There are MANY known reasons one can develop gallstones and "Yes" - An unhealthy liver MAY be one of those reasons for a select-few; but it is definitely not the ONLY reason for developing gallbladder complications.

The bile in our capsules is from cattle and is beneficial to introduce a concentrated dose to increase fat absorption into the body.
Many primary care practitioners recommend gallbladder patients reduce the fat content of foods they eat. Unfortunately this can lead to constipation.
Dr Cabot recommends you begin taking
Ox Bile capsules – 1 - 2 capsules at the beginning of each meal to replace the bile that can no longer be delivered from your gallbladder to help essential fat absorption.
Super Digestive Enzymes – 1 capsule at the beginning of each meal.

Magnesium Complete – 2 tablets twice daily.

Thank you for this article. I now know where my Vitamin D deficiency comes from.
Are there any medicines that metabolize in the gall bladder, therefore rendering them ineffective?
The gallbladder is designed to store and concentrate the bile that is produced in the liver, it does not metabolise any substances at all.
Bile contains metabolites of drugs and nutrients that have been produced in the liver.
In your case, the bile and metabolites will be released directly into the digestive tract as it is produced and there will not be enough at any time to emulsify your dietary fats to enable them to be absorbed into your body, hence the need for ox-bile capsules.
Kind Regards,
Jessah
I have much more energy but immediately after the surgery, I went straight into menopause. I had regular periods right up until the surgery. What is the connection between gall bladder removal and early menopause and hormones? Happy to feel well, but was not ready for menopause.
I can tell that I changed immediately.
Dr Cabot says there may be a correlation between surgery and menopause in that the anaesthetic may have affected your ovaries and eggs.
We recommend you wait 3 months before having both an FSH and AMH test to determine if you have truly entered your menopausal phase.
Dr Cabot recommends you begin taking
Femme Phase – 2 capsules twice daily to ease the discomfort of menopausal symptoms.
Livatone Plus – 2 capsules twice daily, to improve liver function.
N-Acetyl-Cysteine (NAC 600mg) – 2 capsules twice daily well away from food, if any upset occurs take at the beginning of your meals. As you will see from the attached pamphlet this supplement works well with Livatone Plus to get your liver better faster. This supplement hastens liver healing. This supplement is the precursor nutrient of glutathione; the body’s strongest anti-oxidant.

Any one experience this? I feel I am too tyoung. Othetwise, fine!
I was a young 50. I was not having any premenopausal symptoms
and had regular periods and ovulated. I didn't mind becoming menopausal naturally, but was not at all ready to give up a healthy sex life.
I was told I am 50 by the doctor. And I get that. I just know there is a connection between being healthy one week and having absolutely no sex drive later.
I feel like I just entered a new phase immediately after the surgery.Lost spunk, vim, vigor, and worse, ambition. Not depressed because even that is gone. I even do not anger easily...
Kind of like after surgery, "hmmm" is my lackluster resonse.
Even current elections ate like..."hmmmm, that"s interesting."
Not cynical. Still care, but without passion.
All after gb surgery. Feel like the gb may be more important than we recognize.
Could you please share the lifestyle changes that you made. What's your diet like? Im experiencing all the negative effects that you mentioned. Thanks!
Any one experience this?
Had my gall bladder removed a week ago today. I often have a sore back either side of spine, and after eating. I feel bloated and gassy. I still have my plasters covering my wounds but have bandaged my whole stomach as I feel I need to support it all the time. My surgeon told me the day after surgery to eat normally...I was quite surprised.

I had my gallbladder removed a year and a half ago. I didn't have stones, Dr. said it was just "Abnormal" and needed to be removed. I am living with regret at not pursuing other options besides surgery. Anyway, some days are better than others but most days I have diarrhea at some point, itchy skin, peeling on my fingertips and constant feeling of very low energy along with general, weird pains and discomfort throughout my abdomen. I currently take a daily liver rescue pill, a pro-biotic and a multi vitamin. Again some days are better than others but, it is quite demoralizing having this constant feeling of general malaise. Does anyone else have this problem?
Positive thoughts of hope to all,
Cheers,
Chris

I had my Gallbladder removed in 2013 and have had every symptom mentioned reoccurring diarrhea, bloating, indigestion, low energy, and I am always sleepy. This has become daily life for me & I have just learned to push through. Recently I started experiencing headaches, I feel light headed, I'm forgetful, can't concentrate and my fingers and toes go numb constantly & I've gained 30lbs. After a visit to my Physician, I left feeling like I might be losing my mind as my doctor feels it can be 1 of 2 things, Anxiety or a vitamin deficiency. The thought of possibly dealing with Anxiety on top of everything else scares me but after the information I've gathered, I'm calm & certain this is a vitamin deficiency that stems from the gall bladder removal. I have lab work schedule that will hopefully confirm this so I can begin treating the causes and be done with these symptoms. Thank You.
Please let me know if you get an answer! I had my gallbladder removed September 2012 and currently experiencing symptoms very similar to yours. Finger numbness is very weird! Am struggling with a baby and young boy to look after and desperately trying to find a way to cope.
Thanks in advance!
Without a gallbladder, absorption of essential fatty acids will be impaired.
Digestion of fats can be improved by taking a good liver tonic such as Livatone Plus and supplementing with Ox Bile.
High triglycerides are often associated with Syndrome X, elevated insulin and fatty liver.
Following a low carbohydrate diet - avoiding sugar, flour products, processed and fried foods and increasing vegetables and fibre can help reduce triglycerides.
Don't forget to include adequate protein and healthy fats in your diet.
There is a great deal of helpful information in Dr Cabot's books'Save Your Gallbladder Naturally and What to Do if You've Already Lost It' and 'Cholesterol: The Real Truth'.

You need to have hot water and the juice of ½ a lemon first thing each morning.
Also, 1 to 2 capsules of Ox bile with each meal and Livatone Plus 2 caps twice daily.
It could have been IBS, so I would also recommend 1 tsp of Glutamine powder in water twice daily.

Jessah
