Serrapeptase
Serrapeptase is an enzyme that was first discovered in the intestine of silkworms. This enzyme is necessary in order for the silkworm to dissolve the hard cocoon it is surrounded by, when it is ready to emerge as a moth. The silkworm also uses this enzyme to allow it to feed on tough mulberry leaves. These days, serrapeptase supplements are not derived from silkworms; the enzyme is derived from a natural fermentation process. Serrapeptase is a protease enzyme; that means it has the ability to digest protein. Research has shown this remarkable enzyme can help to dissolve non-living tissue in the body such as cysts, swellings, plaque and scar tissue.
Serrapeptase helps to reduce inflammation in the body
Excessive inflammation is a feature of just about every disease and is present in any condition where pain, fatigue and fluid retention are present. But what causes inflammation? These are the most common causes:
- Elevated blood sugar. Certainly diabetics experience a great deal of inflammation in their bodies because of elevated blood sugar, but you don’t have to be a diabetic to experience this. Regularly consuming sugar, grains and high glycemic load foods will flood your bloodstream with glucose. Sugar is sticky and it can bind to proteins in your body and damage them.
- Infections. Any type of bacterial, viral, fungal or parasitic infection raises inflammation because your immune cells produce massive quantities of inflammatory chemicals as they try to fight the infection. This is particularly a problem in chronic, long term infections.
- Food allergy, intolerance and sensitivity. Whenever you consume a food you are sensitive to, your body behaves as though you swallowed something harmful, such as a virus or bacteria. As your immune system tries to cope with this scenario, it produces a host of inflammatory chemicals. This can become a significant problem if you unknowingly eat this food(s) every day.
- Stress. Unfortunately the hormones your body produces while you are stressed cause inflammatory damage, free radical damage and a great deal of wear and tear to your body. Magnesium helps to counter some of this damage.
- Lack of sleep or poor quality sleep. Good solid sleep is one of the most powerful anti-inflammatory remedies there is, and it’s free and feels great. Unfortunately most people know this but try as they might, they can’t get good sleep consistently. Insomnia or just poor quality sleep is endemic in modern society.
- Lack of antioxidants in your diet. All of the various conditions listed above cause your body to use up vitamins, minerals and antioxidants at a much faster rate. The problem is, most people don’t replenish their bodies with nutrients sufficiently. Ideally you would consume a raw vegetable salad for lunch and dinner each day and include a glass of raw vegetable juice most days of the week.
- Injuries, accidents and surgery are a major physical stress on the body and these processes all generate a great volume of inflammatory chemicals. These inflammatory chemicals are very useful in acute conditions and are necessary for the recovery process. Unfortunately many patients are left with chronic pain, swelling and immobility because the inflammatory process has continued for too long. Serrapeptase is excellent for these people.
How Serrapeptase can help
Ideally you could reduce the level of inflammation in your body by addressing each of the points mentioned above. Unfortunately, this is not always possible and sometimes the source of inflammation cannot be identified and remains hidden.
Serrapeptase basically works by giving your insides a good clean up. Being a protein digesting enzyme, it helps to clear out protein deposits that are not serving a useful purpose in your body. It has anti-inflammatory, anti-oedemic (reduces fluid retention) and fibrinolytic activity (helps to break down blood clots). It can help to clear mucus, fluid, blood clots, debris and immune complexes from your body. In this way it helps to reduce pain, improve mobility and increase energy. Serrapeptase helps to keep arteries clean and clear because it reduces the inflammation in arteries which is what promotes cholesterol accumulation and narrowing of the arteries.
How should Serrapeptase be taken?
Serrapeptase must be taken on an empty stomach in order to obtain the systemic anti-inflammatory benefits. If you consume it with a meal, your body will use it to digest the food in your intestines. Therefore most people find it easiest to take serrapeptase first thing in the morning. You can eat half an hour later. A typical starting dose is between 125 000 and 250 000 IU per day.

Inflammation is likely to have contributed to your nasal polyps and to treat the cause of these we recommend you reduce the consumption of foods that increase this to happen.
Remove high carbohydrate items, all processed foods and dairy foods.
This results in a diet high in low carb vegetables and good quality protein.
To further reduce inflammation begin taking NAC – 2 capsules twice daily, well away from food with a large glass of water to avoid stomach irritation rather than Serrapeptase.

Can you please recommend me what products to order for:
- Endometriosis + endometriotic cyst + estrogen dominance
- Blocked fallopian tubes
(I have to mention that I really want to get pregnant)
- Sinusitis
- Oral candida that keeps coming back after a while
Thank you!
Endometriosis is a combination autoimmune/hormonal imbalance condition so a protocol as is found in Dr Cabot’s Autoimmune Book is called for and also FemPro at the recommended dosage twice daily.
Blocked fallopian tubes are very likely to benefit from Serrapeptase – beginning with 1 capsule daily and gradually increasing to 2 capsules twice daily on an empty stomach.
To assist with pregnancy the autoimmune program, Vitamin D, Iodine, Selenium are beneficial.
You may also get sinusitis benefits with Serrapeptase but if not then consider NAC – 2 capsules twice daily, well away from food with a large glass of water to avoid stomach irritation.
Remain strict with the Autoimmune protocol and it may assist with the Candida infection.

An enlarged prostate is a strong indication of high inflammation in your body.
And you may have had this for a considerable time with the operations you have already had.
To reduce this we suggest you begin a liver friendly, anti-inflammatory diet and lifestyle as is found with Dr Cabot’s 15 Day Detox and Maintenance Program.
Supplements to also consider are NAC – 2 capsules twice daily, well away from food with a large glass of water to avoid stomach irritation, Serrapeptase – begin with 1 capsule on an empty stomach and gradually increase to 2 capsules twice daily, Magnesium powder – ½ tsp twice daily or tablets – 2 tablets twice daily, Vitamin C – at least ½ tsp twice daily.

Serrapeptase is beneficial for those with fertility problems associated with scarring and adhesions in the fallopian tubes, and around the ovaries, as is found with endometriosis.
PCOS is a completely different situation. PCOS is usually caused by excess testosterone interfering with normal cycling.
Progesterone is very successful as an anti-testosterone hormone and we recommend you take it at the recommended dosage on the container.

My son, 31, has Gilbert’s.
He has a healthy diet (gluten free), busy professional life and goes to the gym but suffers with nausea, tummy ache and fatigue at times. He takes good supplements including MegaSpore, digestive enzymes and calcium-d-glycinate. He also does liver flushes when he feels he needs to. Would the Serrapeptase help with lowering the bilirubin?
I appreciate your comments.
Many thanks
Serrapeptase is not an appropriate supplement for Gilbert’s Syndrome.
The supplements your son is taking are not liver centered and we recommend he begin taking Livatone Plus – 2 capsules twice daily, NAC – 2 capsules twice daily, well away from food with a large glass of water to avoid stomach irritation. Rather than a Gluten Free diet, your son’s liver may benefit from a Ketogenic style diet.

So glad to find your site. I suffered a knee injury May 4, 2022 while playing soccer with the kids which resulted in a torn ACL and rolled inner meniscus. I am aged 41. Without boring you with too many details, bottom line is that surgery was 99 days after the injury, performed just two weeks ago, August 11. At my one-week checkup the doctor said surgery went very well and everything looked good, except that I’ll be battling scar tissue that settled in during that long delay between injury and surgery, even though he successfully manipulated it at complete range while I was under anesthesia. I can feel massive restriction inside my knee while working on weight bearing exercises. I’m getting very little flexion — around 15° — and can’t seem to move past that. It’s still extremely stiff, and I’m quite discouraged. More manipulation under anesthesia is an option. I have recently been reading about serrapeptase and am hopeful that it can help increase my flexion and decrease pain. What dosage do you think is appropriate for this situation?
Many thanks and kind regards,
Dinah
We consider Serrapeptase to be a beneficial supplement wherever scar tissue develops in the body.
To soften the scar tissue, we recommend you start with Vitamin E daily.
Another supplement to encourage better range of movement with far less discomfort is Vitamin C.

Thanks for making yourself available to address so many health concerns.
My wife experienced a hemorrhage in her eye because the pressure in her eye was high. She lost some of her sight in that eye. She is now taking eye drops to lower the pressure there. Can serrapeptase improve her vision by clearing out the scar tissue caused by the hemorrhage?
We have a number of articles dealing with Glaucoma and we recommend you read them on your wife’s behalf.
Serrapeptase may help clear the scar tissue collecting in her eye.
Vitamin E is also encouraged to soften the scar tissue in her eye.
These recommendations are made not knowing if she is taking any medications that may contraindicate the use of these supplements.

Serrapeptase is a protein and is too large to cross the brain blood barrier, but it is a powerful anti-inflammatory so is still valuable, along with dietary changes to reduce overall inflammation.
Having had an intramural hemorrhage indicates that your blood vessels are weakened and this is best addressed by a daily dose of Vitamin C of 2,000mg in divided doses throughout each day.
To soften scar tissue begin taking Vitamin E – 1 capsule daily with a meal, so natural factors in your body may resolve the scarring.

Your wife’s cyst may be able to be shrunk and Serrapeptase at a dose of 125 000SU to 250 000SU twice daily on an empty stomach is well indicated for this.
To assist in the shrinkage it is important to reverse the growth process and to achieve this we recommend you severely restrict carbohydrates in your diet because they stimulate insulin, which is a growth hormone.
Dairy foods are high in Insulin Like Growth Hormone 1, which is also potentially implicated in growths within the body, so dairy is also best removed from the diet.
Supplementation with Selenium - 1 capsule daily and NAC – 2 capsules twice daily, well away from food with a large glass of water to avoid stomach irritation is recommended to reduce inflammation considerably to assist the shrinkage.

I have seasonal allergies and narrow eustachian tubes that flare up. Upon investigating that, my ent found that I have a mucous retention cyst in one of the sinuses in the front of my face. Would serrapeptase be beneficial?
Serrapeptase is beneficial whenever there is mucous buildup and begin with a dose of 125 000SU daily on an empty stomach. After a week you may increase the dose to 125 000SU twice daily. If this dose is tolerated you may increase the dose to 250 000SU twice daily to clear the mucous faster.
Seasonal allergies tend to flare when high histamine production roccurs in the respiratory and digestive tracts, and by reducing inflammation the response may become less severe and stressful.
Supplements to help include Allergy Relief - 3 to 6 tablets daily, Selenium - 1capsule daily and Glutamine - 1 teaspoonful in water morning and before bed.

Both Serrapeptase and low dose aspirin have the effect of thinning the blood.
Serrapeptase has an advantage in that it does not have the potential for causing gastric bleeding which often occurs with low dose aspirin.
It is beyond the scope of this service to suggest any adjustments to prescribed medications and you are best to discuss this with your primary care practitioner, and we do not know why you have been prescribed low dose aspirin in the first place.

I started Serrapeptase two weeks ago and had no issues the first week. Now the second week my joint where I had a ganglion cyst a while back is killing me. I have been also feeling extremely tired/fatigued throughout the day and very sleepy. Have been taking naps during the day and still able to sleep through the night. I wake up very sleepy as well. Could Serrapeptase be braking down old infections, viruses , dead tissues and therefore making me fatigued and sleepy to heal and process it all? I am taking 120,000 along with 2,000 fu Nattokinase before bed and upon waking up. I am taking it because I had a bruise on my wrist few years ago which resulted in a blood cloth that I am trying to dissolve. Thank you.

Our research indicates that Serrapeptase is beneficial for the liver and does not exacerbate damage although problems can occur when used in cases of advanced cirrhosis when bleeding problems have developed.

If your liver damage does not involve fibrosis of any kind you may get significant benefit from NAC and Livatone Plus.

I just have a quick question. My husband just started taking LiverDoctor Serrapeptase for a bit of a clean up. He's had many surgeries over the years (hip replacements from AVN, he's only 45 & most recently much needed scar tissue removal before we knew about Serrapeptase). Now that he's taking the supplement he is experiencing some joint soreness in his shoulder & a little back discomfort. Nothing major. We're just hoping this is a sign that's it's working on something. I've noticed in some of your other comments you've mentioned that taking vitamin E along with Serrapeptase would minimize side effects. Would you always recommend vitamin E with Serrapeptase and if so how much? Just 400 IU? Take at the same time or stagger? Thank you so much in advance for your diligent efforts to help us with our questions!
The discomfort your husband is experiencing may be that as the Serrapeptase removes the non-useful protein buildup it may be that the joints are be momentarily weakened by the loss and yet to replace it with beneficial collagen deposition.
We recommend he begin encouraging this with a diet that is high in protein to provide a ready source of collagen to help the replacement and Collagen Food to keep this collagen as healthy as possible.
Vitamin E has the ability to soften scar tissue to enable Serrapeptase to resolve redundant protein deposits more quickly. Vitamin E is a fat soluble vitamin and so is stored in the body for a considerable amount of time and 400iu a day is sufficient.
It does not have to be taken at the same time as the Serrapeptase.

I finally realized this is not a supplement to take forever because at some point it has done what it needed to do. I would say get off it for a period of time and then take it for a short time to clear any build up.
I had to do this because I ended up with severe muscle cramping like a charlie horse on several areas of the body. my body would just seize up. I also had a pain in the chest. All that stopped when I quit taking the Serrapeptase.
Your comments are most welcomed and we appreciate your sharing of your first hand experience with Serrapeptase.
We are concerned that even though it did provide appropriate reduction in your scar tissue that it did not help with pain and inflammation.
Please tell us what has caused your pain and inflammation so we can assist you further.

What do you recommend I take with it ?
Many aspects of Endometriosis are autoimmune in nature and tend to be triggered by inflammation, so our first recommendation is a liver, gut friendly program as is found in Dr Cabot’s 15 Day Cleanse and Maintenance Plan.
Dr Cabot’s insightful book ‘Healing Autoimmune Disease – A Plan to Help Your Immune System and Reduce Inflammation’ is also highly recommended because having one autoimmune condition is often accompanied by others.
Vitamin E helps to soften scar tissue and make it easier for Serrapeptase to resolve the endometrial tissue and often associated scarring and adhesions that often accompany this condition.
Hormones are also very important and Endometriosis is an estrogen dominance expression so it is very important to ensure you are exposed to as few Xenoestrogens as possible and to take Progesterone every day to reduce the effect of the estrogens that are present.

Thank you for helpful support for everyone's health concerns. I have a macular pucker in one eye which is progressing. Drs don't know cause for the scarring which pulls the tissue causing distorted vision. Would serrapeptase be helpful and how much should be taken? Would serrapeptase help with meniscus injury? TY
Thank you for your kind words.
Serrapeptase would be expected to be beneficial to soften and resolve the scarring in your eye.
Although it is difficult to determine the cause of this condition, we recommend you keep your eye tissue as healthy as is possible by minimizing the chance of sugar irregularities by reducing all foods that might contribute to raised blood sugar. Begin with 1 capsule daily for a few days and increase to 1 capsule twice daily and increase to the therapeutic dose of 2 capsules twice daily with water and on an empty stomach.
Dr Cabot also prescribes NAC, Selenium and Vitamin A – 10,000iu daily.

Thank you for all your efforts to help.
I wasn’t able to find the post you are asking about to understand the context of the response.
Yes, anti-inflammatory nutrients significantly reduce the viscosity of the blood.
This enables the blood to flow more smoothly and easily in arteries and veins.
This may increase the risk of bruising and bleeding, so we recommend everyone ensures their blood vessels are strong and resilient, and Vitamin C is clearly indicted for this.

Cirrhosis indicates that your liver disease has been present for a considerable time.
Have doctors determined the nature of the four tumors that are present?
Ascites indicates that your liver is not able to produce sufficient albumin and this leads to serum seeping from the blood vessels and it collects in the abdominal cavity.
Has your name been placed to a liver transplant list?
It is most important to remove the liver damaging agent that caused the liver disease that has resulted in the cirrhosis.
Viral disease can be effectively treated now, and AA assists with alcohol abstinence.
Diets high in carbohydrate, damaged fats and/or processed food are becoming the most common cause for liver transplant due to cirrhosis and liver failure.
Adopting a low-inflammatory liver friendly plan like Dr Cabot’s 15 Day Cleanse and Maintenance Program and begin taking Livatone Plus, NAC, and Vitamin C.
When symptoms have reduced you may then consider Serrapeptase and Vitamin E, although care is to be taken with any bleeding complications from the cirrhosis.

I am contemplating on taking serrapeptase. I have a few questions about this supplement.
1. I cannot swallow pills do you know of any reputable sellers that sell powder or liquid? If not can I open a veggie capsule and take the powder?
2. How do you prevent side effects? I am sure I read somewhere that side effects are caused by the break down of protein.
3. I want to start low how much should I take?
4. Acid Reflux has narrowed my esophagus pipe I believe it is scar tissue can I use serrapeptase to remove the scar tissue so I can swallow properly again? Or would that be dangerous?
Thank you

Serrapeptase comes in enteric coated capsules, which is necessary because it is destroyed by stomach acid.
Serrapeptase induces the breakdown of extraneous protein that the body deposits to protect areas of the body where high inflammation is causing damage.
It is best to begin with one capsule daily and gradually increase as your body can cope with it.
Acid reflux induced esophageal scarring can be helped with Serrapeptase although the use of Glutamine is very healing for the whole length of the digestive tract and we recommend you take one teaspoon in water a number of times daily and the most beneficial time is just before bed.

Should 1 capsule of Serrapeptase be taken TOGETHER with 1 capsule of NAC OR should they be taken 30 mins - 1 hr apart? I suffer from fibroids so I know the NAC breaks down the biofilm layer that surrounds the fibroid so serrapeptase can eventually go in and do it's job by eradicating the fibroid altogether.
NAC is best taken 15 to 20 minutes before food with a large glass of water and Serrapeptase is to be taken on an empty stomach and also away from NAC.
Uterine fibroids tend to be associated with hormonal imbalance and it is best to address the cause as well as treat those that are already present.
Diet and supplementation is necessary, and Dr Cabot prescribes ‘I Can’t Lose Weight, and I Don’t Know Why’ or Dr Cabot’s 15 Day Cleanse and Maintenance Program, Femme Phase, Progesterone, and Vitamin D.
