Serrapeptase
Serrapeptase is an enzyme that was first discovered in the intestine of silkworms. This enzyme is necessary in order for the silkworm to dissolve the hard cocoon it is surrounded by, when it is ready to emerge as a moth. The silkworm also uses this enzyme to allow it to feed on tough mulberry leaves. These days, serrapeptase supplements are not derived from silkworms; the enzyme is derived from a natural fermentation process. Serrapeptase is a protease enzyme; that means it has the ability to digest protein. Research has shown this remarkable enzyme can help to dissolve non-living tissue in the body such as cysts, swellings, plaque and scar tissue.
Serrapeptase helps to reduce inflammation in the body
Excessive inflammation is a feature of just about every disease and is present in any condition where pain, fatigue and fluid retention are present. But what causes inflammation? These are the most common causes:
- Elevated blood sugar. Certainly diabetics experience a great deal of inflammation in their bodies because of elevated blood sugar, but you don’t have to be a diabetic to experience this. Regularly consuming sugar, grains and high glycemic load foods will flood your bloodstream with glucose. Sugar is sticky and it can bind to proteins in your body and damage them.
- Infections. Any type of bacterial, viral, fungal or parasitic infection raises inflammation because your immune cells produce massive quantities of inflammatory chemicals as they try to fight the infection. This is particularly a problem in chronic, long term infections.
- Food allergy, intolerance and sensitivity. Whenever you consume a food you are sensitive to, your body behaves as though you swallowed something harmful, such as a virus or bacteria. As your immune system tries to cope with this scenario, it produces a host of inflammatory chemicals. This can become a significant problem if you unknowingly eat this food(s) every day.
- Stress. Unfortunately the hormones your body produces while you are stressed cause inflammatory damage, free radical damage and a great deal of wear and tear to your body. Magnesium helps to counter some of this damage.
- Lack of sleep or poor quality sleep. Good solid sleep is one of the most powerful anti-inflammatory remedies there is, and it’s free and feels great. Unfortunately most people know this but try as they might, they can’t get good sleep consistently. Insomnia or just poor quality sleep is endemic in modern society.
- Lack of antioxidants in your diet. All of the various conditions listed above cause your body to use up vitamins, minerals and antioxidants at a much faster rate. The problem is, most people don’t replenish their bodies with nutrients sufficiently. Ideally you would consume a raw vegetable salad for lunch and dinner each day and include a glass of raw vegetable juice most days of the week.
- Injuries, accidents and surgery are a major physical stress on the body and these processes all generate a great volume of inflammatory chemicals. These inflammatory chemicals are very useful in acute conditions and are necessary for the recovery process. Unfortunately many patients are left with chronic pain, swelling and immobility because the inflammatory process has continued for too long. Serrapeptase is excellent for these people.
How Serrapeptase can help
Ideally you could reduce the level of inflammation in your body by addressing each of the points mentioned above. Unfortunately, this is not always possible and sometimes the source of inflammation cannot be identified and remains hidden.
Serrapeptase basically works by giving your insides a good clean up. Being a protein digesting enzyme, it helps to clear out protein deposits that are not serving a useful purpose in your body. It has anti-inflammatory, anti-oedemic (reduces fluid retention) and fibrinolytic activity (helps to break down blood clots). It can help to clear mucus, fluid, blood clots, debris and immune complexes from your body. In this way it helps to reduce pain, improve mobility and increase energy. Serrapeptase helps to keep arteries clean and clear because it reduces the inflammation in arteries which is what promotes cholesterol accumulation and narrowing of the arteries.
How should Serrapeptase be taken?
Serrapeptase must be taken on an empty stomach in order to obtain the systemic anti-inflammatory benefits. If you consume it with a meal, your body will use it to digest the food in your intestines. Therefore most people find it easiest to take serrapeptase first thing in the morning. You can eat half an hour later. A typical starting dose is between 125 000 and 250 000 IU per day.

I was diagnosed with inoperable pancreatic cancer last year Spring and had my overuse removed as it was believed the disease had metastasised to one of them. I’ve been stable since then after 2 bouts of 1st gemcitabin and 2nd folforinox. I’ve not had any treatment since March. However about a week ago I had itching all over my body with dark urine. The itching is unbearable and I was prescribed a powder to ease the itching. Had scans as they are sure it’s a blocked bile duct. My liver function blood tests show elevation (not majorly high, but very present) in enzymes. Can serrapeptase aid in unblocking bile ducts? I had my CT scan yesterday and will see my consultant in 2 weeks time, but want to help myself in the meantime. I continue to work and go about my normal busy life, but the itching is ridiculously, especially now the weather has warmed up.
Thanks
Serrapeptase is likely to be very beneficial to reduce the generalised inflammation that your body would be experiencing at the moment, which may have a beneficial effect towards unblocking your bile ducts, and improving your liver function.
To boost your liver function and re-establish the phase II detox, to reduce skin itching, Dr Cabot prescribes
Livatone Plus – 1 to 2 capsules twice daily, to improve liver function.
N-Acetyl-Cysteine (NAC 600mg) – 1 to 2 capsules twice daily well away from food, if any upset occurs take at the beginning of your meals. This supplement works well with Livatone Plus to get your liver better faster. This supplement is the precursor nutrient of glutathione; the body’s strongest anti-oxidant.
You may also consider topical remedies to neutralise the acidic metabolites that are the probable cause of your itching. Relief may be had by bathing in Epsom salts with best quality lavender essential oil.
Another skin calming option is to add some chamomile tea bags or some loose dried chamomile to a bath that has an oat bag (rolled oats in a mesh bag) to another bath to neutralise the itching.
Thirdly, may we suggest a seaweed bath to provide healing and alkalinising gels to provide relief.

It is most unusual that you have begun to react with Serrapeptase itself, but as it breaks down and releases bacteria from biofilms and they die off you may get a herxheimer reaction.
Activated charcoal attaches to the toxins that cause the reaction, and is beneficial for herx reactions, although it is best to take it at least 2hours after the Serrapeptase.

I am considering taking serrapaptase, but I have a few questions. I take crestor and metoprolol now before bed. I also take a krill oil, vit e with selenium, cal/mag/zinc, B complex before bed. If I take a capsule of serrapaptase only in the morning is it okay to take the krill at bed time?
One capsule is not usually considered an adequate dosage to effect the benefits of Serrapeptase. After 2 to 3 days of 1 capsule we recommend you take 2 capsules either once or twice daily on an empty stomach and then the krill at bedtime is fine.

I had a breast argumentation Almost two weeks ago. I am developing a capsular contracture in one breast. Would it be okay to start taking serrapeptase now? Would it help? If so how much and often should I take it 120,000 spu?
Serrapeptase is certainly indicated for capsular contracture after breast augmentation.
Liver Doctor’s product provides you with 125,000SU per capsule.
Serrapeptase – begin with 1 capsule twice daily for 3 days, increase to 1 capsule twice daily for 4 days and if it well tolerated you may increase the dose to 2 capsules twice daily and always to be taken on an empty stomach. Care to be taken with this supplement if you have liver related bleeding problems or if you are taking blood thinners.

Serrapeptase can thin the blood and fish oil is also a blood thinner. In most cases this is a good thing, as it improves circulation and reduces the risk of heart disease. Taking high doses of fish oil with serrapeptase could potentially thin the blood too much. In regards to the other supplements, we recommend you speak with your healthcare practitioner.

There hasn’t been a study investigating the use of serrapeptase specifically for your condition. Based on the information you’ve given, 6 to 12 months would be the ideal duration of use.
Vitamin D, vitamin C and zinc are also helpful for healing and strengthening the uterine muscle.

Serrapeptase may also act as a blood thinner, which may be resulting in the spotting you are experiencing. If you have fragile blood vessels, the effect may be more pronounced and Dr Cabot prescribes
MSM Plus Vitamin C – ½ teaspoon twice daily. Formulated to promote collagen production and reduce inflammation to strengthen connective tissue, including blood vessel walls.

The pericarditis was probably autoimmune in origin thus I would recommend you follow a gluten free diet.
I also recommend a daily magnesium supplement.
The liver is unique and can undergo a lot of renewal.
I would take Serrapeptase 2 daily for 3 months as it will help to reduce scarring, but this alone is not enough.

Gout and artery calcification are usually manifestations of metabolic syndrome (insulin resistance, syndrome X).
Along with a low carbohydrate diet, berberine is excellent for helping to lower uric acid. The dose is 2 capsules twice daily with meals.

If you get a digestive problem from taking serrapeptase, you may have inflammation in your stomach or intestines, and would benefit from glutamine, a probiotic and diet changes.

I was taking it for general inflammation and joint pain. It was working so well...almost NO knee pain!
Then, the next Saturday, exactly one week later, I'd taken it, first thing in the morning, as usual.
Probably 3 hours later, I ate a normal (for me) breakfast, eggs, bacon, and toast.
About half an hour later...stomach pain; cramping; bloating; nausea; vomiting; and diarrhea.
This lasted for a couple of hours, then I just felt crappy all day. Better the next day.
But I dropped the Serrapeptase for a while, just in case that was the cause.
Then, this past Saturday, exactly another week after "the incident", I tried again. Everything the same as the week before.
And. Exactly. The. Same. Outcome. Only I felt crappier all day than I had the week before.
What's going on? I don't see that others have had this reaction. Is it possible that some people just cannot take Serrapeptase???
And WHY would it work so well for exactly a week and then turn on me???
Rarely patients are hypersensitive to Serrapeptase, in such cases this can usually be overcome if you take it in the middle of meals – try it again by taking one capsule three times daily in the middle of a meal.

After a bit of reading it appears some common themes persist around SP.
1 Detox or herxing is likely esp if disease is present, or elderly.
2 Starting slow should be practiced.
3 Many sites say no side effects, but initial detox symptoms can be quite unpleasant for many. I was very unwell after my first 120,000. I feel this should be highlighted, even though it passes quickly in most cases.
4 Risk of pneumonia in elderly and smokers needs better coverage.
My question is: when I discovered the benefits of nebulising col silver I never when back to via the GI tract. Can SP be nebulised? Also can lugols be nebulised? Or is transdermal a better alternative? If SP can be nebulised, what is the best way of obtaining/creating a liquid solution?
Thanks Frank
We don’t recommend serrapaptase is nebulized. Lugols iodine can be used in a transdermal manner.
