Serrapeptase
Serrapeptase is an enzyme that was first discovered in the intestine of silkworms. This enzyme is necessary in order for the silkworm to dissolve the hard cocoon it is surrounded by, when it is ready to emerge as a moth. The silkworm also uses this enzyme to allow it to feed on tough mulberry leaves. These days, serrapeptase supplements are not derived from silkworms; the enzyme is derived from a natural fermentation process. Serrapeptase is a protease enzyme; that means it has the ability to digest protein. Research has shown this remarkable enzyme can help to dissolve non-living tissue in the body such as cysts, swellings, plaque and scar tissue.
Serrapeptase helps to reduce inflammation in the body
Excessive inflammation is a feature of just about every disease and is present in any condition where pain, fatigue and fluid retention are present. But what causes inflammation? These are the most common causes:
- Elevated blood sugar. Certainly diabetics experience a great deal of inflammation in their bodies because of elevated blood sugar, but you don’t have to be a diabetic to experience this. Regularly consuming sugar, grains and high glycemic load foods will flood your bloodstream with glucose. Sugar is sticky and it can bind to proteins in your body and damage them.
- Infections. Any type of bacterial, viral, fungal or parasitic infection raises inflammation because your immune cells produce massive quantities of inflammatory chemicals as they try to fight the infection. This is particularly a problem in chronic, long term infections.
- Food allergy, intolerance and sensitivity. Whenever you consume a food you are sensitive to, your body behaves as though you swallowed something harmful, such as a virus or bacteria. As your immune system tries to cope with this scenario, it produces a host of inflammatory chemicals. This can become a significant problem if you unknowingly eat this food(s) every day.
- Stress. Unfortunately the hormones your body produces while you are stressed cause inflammatory damage, free radical damage and a great deal of wear and tear to your body. Magnesium helps to counter some of this damage.
- Lack of sleep or poor quality sleep. Good solid sleep is one of the most powerful anti-inflammatory remedies there is, and it’s free and feels great. Unfortunately most people know this but try as they might, they can’t get good sleep consistently. Insomnia or just poor quality sleep is endemic in modern society.
- Lack of antioxidants in your diet. All of the various conditions listed above cause your body to use up vitamins, minerals and antioxidants at a much faster rate. The problem is, most people don’t replenish their bodies with nutrients sufficiently. Ideally you would consume a raw vegetable salad for lunch and dinner each day and include a glass of raw vegetable juice most days of the week.
- Injuries, accidents and surgery are a major physical stress on the body and these processes all generate a great volume of inflammatory chemicals. These inflammatory chemicals are very useful in acute conditions and are necessary for the recovery process. Unfortunately many patients are left with chronic pain, swelling and immobility because the inflammatory process has continued for too long. Serrapeptase is excellent for these people.
How Serrapeptase can help
Ideally you could reduce the level of inflammation in your body by addressing each of the points mentioned above. Unfortunately, this is not always possible and sometimes the source of inflammation cannot be identified and remains hidden.
Serrapeptase basically works by giving your insides a good clean up. Being a protein digesting enzyme, it helps to clear out protein deposits that are not serving a useful purpose in your body. It has anti-inflammatory, anti-oedemic (reduces fluid retention) and fibrinolytic activity (helps to break down blood clots). It can help to clear mucus, fluid, blood clots, debris and immune complexes from your body. In this way it helps to reduce pain, improve mobility and increase energy. Serrapeptase helps to keep arteries clean and clear because it reduces the inflammation in arteries which is what promotes cholesterol accumulation and narrowing of the arteries.
How should Serrapeptase be taken?
Serrapeptase must be taken on an empty stomach in order to obtain the systemic anti-inflammatory benefits. If you consume it with a meal, your body will use it to digest the food in your intestines. Therefore most people find it easiest to take serrapeptase first thing in the morning. You can eat half an hour later. A typical starting dose is between 125 000 and 250 000 IU per day.

Thank you for your query.
Serrapeptase will not cause low platelets and is usually due to autoimmune disease.
Dr Cabot recommends reading her book on Autoimmune Disease and going on a gluten-free diet.

My other issue is innapropriate inflammatory response with histamine and osteoarthritis.

We wouldn't recommend taking Serrapeptase at this time and instead having a softer approach.

It is highly unlikely that Serrapeptase is the cause of your weight gain.
Fibroids can actually cause weight gain, but there are also several other causes.

Long term - how long can one take Serrapeptase, and at what dosage?
Gout and artery calcification are usually manifestations of metabolic syndrome (insulin resistance, syndrome X).
Along with a low carbohydrate diet, berberine is excellent for helping to lower uric acid. The dose is 2 capsules twice daily with meals.
Vitamin K2 and fish oil help to clear calcification from arteries. Serrapeptase would be helpful, but is not the most appropriate remedy.

I recently (Jan. 4) had surgery on my face to remove some cancer. 26 stitches later I have a substantial scar. I'd like to try Serrapeptase to help with the scar tissue but have one concern. Due to a previous eye injury my pupil is permanently sewn shut with one purse string stitch. Is there any chance the Serrapeptase would compromise the stitch?
Thanks and kindest regards,
Diana Douglas
If the pupil stitch was inserted some time ago, serrapeptase should not affect it. It is only contraindicated in acute conditions.

Serrapeptase should help reduce the scar tissue in the esophagus but is unlikely to resolve it completely. Glutamine is very helpful at healing the tissue and reducing the risk of further scar tissue forming.

If you get a digestive problem from taking serrapeptase, you may have inflammation in your stomach or intestines, and would benefit from glutamine, a probiotic and diet changes.
Ideally Serrapeptase is taken 20 to 30 minutes before food; however if you have a sensitive stomach you may take our Serrapeptase capsules with a small amount of food.
This is because our capsules are specially designed to be acid-resistant and slow release.

I was taking it for general inflammation and joint pain. It was working so well...almost NO knee pain!
Then, the next Saturday, exactly one week later, I'd taken it, first thing in the morning, as usual.
Probably 3 hours later, I ate a normal (for me) breakfast, eggs, bacon, and toast.
About half an hour later...stomach pain; cramping; bloating; nausea; vomiting; and diarrhea.
This lasted for a couple of hours, then I just felt crappy all day. Better the next day.
But I dropped the Serrapeptase for a while, just in case that was the cause.
Then, this past Saturday, exactly another week after "the incident", I tried again. Everything the same as the week before.
And. Exactly. The. Same. Outcome. Only I felt crappier all day than I had the week before.
What's going on? I don't see that others have had this reaction. Is it possible that some people just cannot take Serrapeptase???
And WHY would it work so well for exactly a week and then turn on me???
Rarely patients are hypersensitive to Serrapeptase, in such cases this can usually be overcome if you take it in the middle of meals – try it again by taking one capsule three times daily in the middle of a meal.

I've read that taking it with food will cause the Serrapeptase to focus on digesting the food. But will I still get the other benefits of it, such as working on underlying inflammation?
Thanks again,

After a bit of reading it appears some common themes persist around SP.
1 Detox or herxing is likely esp if disease is present, or elderly.
2 Starting slow should be practiced.
3 Many sites say no side effects, but initial detox symptoms can be quite unpleasant for many. I was very unwell after my first 120,000. I feel this should be highlighted, even though it passes quickly in most cases.
4 Risk of pneumonia in elderly and smokers needs better coverage.
My question is: when I discovered the benefits of nebulising col silver I never when back to via the GI tract. Can SP be nebulised? Also can lugols be nebulised? Or is transdermal a better alternative? If SP can be nebulised, what is the best way of obtaining/creating a liquid solution?
Thanks Frank
We don’t recommend serrapaptase is nebulized. Lugols iodine can be used in a transdermal manner.

I have recently started Serrapeptase for my endometriosis. I am a 26 year old and have been trying to conceive for over a year. Having heard amazing reviews about this enzyme I tried it. However, the last three times I took it on an empty stomach, it made me vomit. Most recently, I ended up hospitalised as the vomiting and diarrhoea would not stop which led to me needing IV fluids etc. I am so disappointed as I really wanted to continue taking it. Is it possible it may have been a bad batch of tablets? Is it worth trying one more time buying a new pack of Serrapeptase? I really need something to help with my endometriosis and to help me conceive.
Rarely patients are hypersensitive to Serrapeptase, in such cases this can usually be overcome if you take it in the middle of meals – try it again by taking one capsule three times daily in the middle of a meal.

My name is yang. I have liver cirrhosis and my kidney is begening to Shut down.my liver is being every day. I heard a little about this serrapeptase is being good. So i got me one of this enzyme bottle 40000 usp and took 2 pills and it gave me pain as hell from my liver. I then, immediately stopped. You think i should continue taking it or should stop? And do you recommend this serrapetase for men who have kidney and prostate issue????
Your response is appreciated, c. Yang
Try taking just one pill of serrapeptase. It should not harm the liver, but sometimes people with cirrhosis have blood clotting problems. Serrapeptase thins the blood, so a lower dose is more appropriate for you.
Yes men with kidney and prostate problems can take serrapeptase.

I have MS (11 years) and am really looking after myself, doing really well and feeling great and I feel like I've got my body and immune system balanced and confident MS won't be giving me more trouble in the future. But I do have some scarring in my spinal cord that if causing drop foot/walking difficulties. If I could just get that scarring to heal I would be back to how I was pre-2007 and maybe even run again. I thought serrapeptase might be the answer but some have suggested that if the scarring heals, it may leave my spinal cord exposed, which is scary, to be sure. I can't find any definitive answer anywhere, my doctor and my neurologist are both clueless. My serrapeptase delivery arrived this morning and i'm both keen to start and apprehensive, do you have an insight into/opinion on this?
Dr Cabot says Serrapeptase is completely safe to take.
