Serrapeptase
Serrapeptase is an enzyme that was first discovered in the intestine of silkworms. This enzyme is necessary in order for the silkworm to dissolve the hard cocoon it is surrounded by, when it is ready to emerge as a moth. The silkworm also uses this enzyme to allow it to feed on tough mulberry leaves. These days, serrapeptase supplements are not derived from silkworms; the enzyme is derived from a natural fermentation process. Serrapeptase is a protease enzyme; that means it has the ability to digest protein. Research has shown this remarkable enzyme can help to dissolve non-living tissue in the body such as cysts, swellings, plaque and scar tissue.
Serrapeptase helps to reduce inflammation in the body
Excessive inflammation is a feature of just about every disease and is present in any condition where pain, fatigue and fluid retention are present. But what causes inflammation? These are the most common causes:
- Elevated blood sugar. Certainly diabetics experience a great deal of inflammation in their bodies because of elevated blood sugar, but you don’t have to be a diabetic to experience this. Regularly consuming sugar, grains and high glycemic load foods will flood your bloodstream with glucose. Sugar is sticky and it can bind to proteins in your body and damage them.
- Infections. Any type of bacterial, viral, fungal or parasitic infection raises inflammation because your immune cells produce massive quantities of inflammatory chemicals as they try to fight the infection. This is particularly a problem in chronic, long term infections.
- Food allergy, intolerance and sensitivity. Whenever you consume a food you are sensitive to, your body behaves as though you swallowed something harmful, such as a virus or bacteria. As your immune system tries to cope with this scenario, it produces a host of inflammatory chemicals. This can become a significant problem if you unknowingly eat this food(s) every day.
- Stress. Unfortunately the hormones your body produces while you are stressed cause inflammatory damage, free radical damage and a great deal of wear and tear to your body. Magnesium helps to counter some of this damage.
- Lack of sleep or poor quality sleep. Good solid sleep is one of the most powerful anti-inflammatory remedies there is, and it’s free and feels great. Unfortunately most people know this but try as they might, they can’t get good sleep consistently. Insomnia or just poor quality sleep is endemic in modern society.
- Lack of antioxidants in your diet. All of the various conditions listed above cause your body to use up vitamins, minerals and antioxidants at a much faster rate. The problem is, most people don’t replenish their bodies with nutrients sufficiently. Ideally you would consume a raw vegetable salad for lunch and dinner each day and include a glass of raw vegetable juice most days of the week.
- Injuries, accidents and surgery are a major physical stress on the body and these processes all generate a great volume of inflammatory chemicals. These inflammatory chemicals are very useful in acute conditions and are necessary for the recovery process. Unfortunately many patients are left with chronic pain, swelling and immobility because the inflammatory process has continued for too long. Serrapeptase is excellent for these people.
How Serrapeptase can help
Ideally you could reduce the level of inflammation in your body by addressing each of the points mentioned above. Unfortunately, this is not always possible and sometimes the source of inflammation cannot be identified and remains hidden.
Serrapeptase basically works by giving your insides a good clean up. Being a protein digesting enzyme, it helps to clear out protein deposits that are not serving a useful purpose in your body. It has anti-inflammatory, anti-oedemic (reduces fluid retention) and fibrinolytic activity (helps to break down blood clots). It can help to clear mucus, fluid, blood clots, debris and immune complexes from your body. In this way it helps to reduce pain, improve mobility and increase energy. Serrapeptase helps to keep arteries clean and clear because it reduces the inflammation in arteries which is what promotes cholesterol accumulation and narrowing of the arteries.
How should Serrapeptase be taken?
Serrapeptase must be taken on an empty stomach in order to obtain the systemic anti-inflammatory benefits. If you consume it with a meal, your body will use it to digest the food in your intestines. Therefore most people find it easiest to take serrapeptase first thing in the morning. You can eat half an hour later. A typical starting dose is between 125 000 and 250 000 IU per day.
The above statements have not been evaluated by the FDA and are not intended to diagnose, treat or cure any disease.

Serrapeptase and nattokinase can be taken together, but nattokinase is usually prescribed for heart concerns.
Vitamin E softens scar tissue and makes it easier for Serrapeptase to remove the scar tissue.
It is of utmost importance to address the cause of the condition in the first place to most effectively reverse it for a fulfilling life in the future.
It is an inflammatory condition where immune cells attack the connective tissue, leading to fibrosis and plaques that get worse with time.
As it is an inflammatory condition it is important to change to an anti-inflammatory diet and maintenance program.
At the very least, gluten is to be completely removed from the diet, dairy is also highly inflammatory as are processed foods.
To effect additional inflammation reduction Dr Cabot prescribes NAC, Selenium and Vitamin C.

I have a small fibroid and also have fibrocystic breast. I've been taking serrapeptase for over 4 months now but haven't seen any benefit yet. I take 120mg twice daily, first thing in the morning and last thing at night away from food. When should I start seeing a difference? Is it good to continue with serrapeptase for a long time?
Fibroids and fibrocystic breasts are most often due to ‘estrogen dominance’.
Women past their mid thirties are prone to these concerns, although they are beginning to occur in younger age groups of women.
Serrapeptase may be beneficial although it is not the complete answer.
You may be low in progesterone, exposed to environmental Xenoestrogens that mimic the action of estrogens above what we produce ourselves, or have a congested liver with less capacity to effectively and safely detoxify the estrogens your body attempts to dispose of daily.
If this might be the case Dr Cabot prescribes Livatone Plus and NAC.

Serrapeptase is well indicated to help reduce the inflammation and also to weaken the membrane that has encapsulated the fat tissue, making it easier to access this tissue and help your body remove the fat deposit.
Lipedema is more often seen in those with Fatty Liver and Dr Cabot prescribes Livatone Plus – 2 capsules twice daily, NAC – 2 capsules twice daily well away from food with a large glass of water., Collagen Food – ½ teaspoon twice daily in water.

I've been taking serrapeptase for a few days now for my blocked fallopian tubes. I had an ectopic in 2007 (whole tube removed) which after an HSG in 2011 showed it had grown back. This year I had another HSG which showed both are blocked with distal blockage. My question is what would be the correct dosage for unblocking tubes and Is it safe to take for the whole cycle?
TYIA
Serrapeptase may take quite a while to unblock your fallopian tubes completely and a minimum dose of 2 capsules twice daily 2 hours after eating and 1 hour before the next meal is recommended to ensure maximum absorption.
It is safe to take for the whole cycle.
Blocked fallopian tubes are often associated with endometriosis and a ketogenic/low carbohydrate diet is beneficial and is likely to reduce the time required to resolve the blockage.

Your wife can begin taking Serrapeptase as an anti-inflammatory. If your wife’s knee is not healing well, we recommend Collagen Food – ½ teaspoon twice daily in water. To assist with any pain she may be experiencing we suggest an anti-inflammatory diet and recommend Dr Cabot’s highly acclaimed 15 Day Cleanse and Maintenance Program.

My mom has diverticulitis and a pacemaker. She's been taking 40,000 SPU of serrapeptase for several weeks but recently learned that the thread used for pacemakers is made from silkworms. Her doctor isn't familiar with this supplement and she's not able to find any information online. Is serrapeptase safe for her to use and if so at what dose?
We have been unable to find any definitive information to confirm that your mother’s pacemaker is secured with silk thread.
To be on the safe side it is best to stop taking Seppapeptase to avoid the thread dissolving.
To prevent diverticular disease flaring to diverticulitis Dr Cabot prescribes BactoClear, Glutamine, Colon Detox, and Fibertone.
Ensure your mother has Magnesium every day to support her heart health.

These are not expected reactions to using Serrapeptase, and we ask why you have begun taking it?
Please stop it immediately, wait until these symptoms stop and after another 4 days begin again but if symptoms return then it would then be considered that your body is reacting unfavorably to it and Serrapeptase is not to be taken.
There may be another regimen that may assist your present condition.

It is best to stop taking anti-inflammatory supplements, like Serrapeptase, a few days before any surgical procedure to ensure bleeding is not excessive. Serrapeptase can be restarted as soon as your doctor determines that the site of the biopsy has healed.

We cannot make any comment on the dizziness you experienced with the Serrapeptase because it was not Dr Cabot’s product, which means we cannot vouch for the quality of the excipients that are in the capsules in addition to the Serrapeptase.
Peripheral plaques are usually due to blocked arterioles and capillaries and Serrapeptase is valuable as a treatment.
Breast cysts often arise when a deficiency of iodine and selenium are present, and we recommend you begin taking Breast Health Capsules – 2 capsules daily to shrink the cysts and protect valuable delicate breast tissue.

We are not qualified in Chinese herbal remedies and for this reason we cannot make any comment about the safety or efficacy of taking the Chinese formula with Serrapeptase.
Our recommendation is to take one remedy for a given time of your choosing, take nothing for a few days and then swap to the other remedy for the same length of time and in this way alternate the two remedies until your problems have reversed.

Serrapeptase is very good for liver scarring and Vitamin E is a fantastic partner supplement because it softens the scarring and makes it easier to resolve. 80,000iu is a very small dose and Dr Cabot recommends 250,000 twice daily for generalized inflammation.
Serrapeptase is to be taken with medical supervision when there are any bleeding conditions or when taking blood thinning medications.
It is in enteric coated capsules so it does not come into contact with the tissue of the stomach. If the discomfort continues it is advisable to have a Urease Breath Test or Gastroscopy to investigate the pain.
There are many causes of hemorrhoids and Dr Cabot suggests your partner begin taking Magnesium Ultrapotent or Magnesium Complete, Livatone Plus and Fibertone daily.

To resolve the muscle pain begin taking Magnesium at a dose of 1 teaspoon twice daily until pain is no longer of concern, then reduce dose to 1/2 teaspoon twice daily every day.
Dr Cabot recommends taking 250,000 (2 capsules) of Serrapeptase twice daily to resolve blocked fallopian tubes. To hasten the process and to soften scar tissue that is usually associated with this condition you are advised to begin Vitamin E. There is usually underlying inflammation when these conditions occur and we suggest the minimum of a diet free of gluten and dairy. If you enjoy a diet high in legumes, they may also be contributing to the inflammatory processes.
Dr Cabot’s 15 Day Cleanse and Maintenance Program are highly anti-inflammatory and you may gain much benefit from them.

MCAS is autoimmune in nature and other strategies are to be implemented not Serrapeptase.
We strongly recommend you obtain a copy of Dr Cabot’s ground-breaking book ‘Healing Autoimmune Disease – A plan to help your immune system and reduce inflammation’ and follow the protocol to help reduce your antibodies and symptoms.
Any low histamine diet is to be gluten, dairy and legume free.
To reverse your AI condition, Dr Cabot prescribes Vitamin A, Vitamin E, Vitamin C, NAC, Selenium, and Ultimate Gut Health.
Mold reactions mean the offending species has to be killed off and to make this as easy as possible, Dr Cabot suggests you regularly sterilize the area that is contaminated to ozone to kill the spores that may be a considerable part of the problem.

There are many causes of infertility and if it is due to endometriosis or blocked tubes Serrapeptase is of benefit.
Your Mirena is an IUD with a synthetic progestin, used for contraception and also to reduce heavy menstrual bleeding.
Serrapeptase is an enzyme and is not expected to interact with the actives of the Mirena.

I am having Liver fibrosis (Fibroscan 10.7 kpa) and diabetes for many years. I started losing weight without trying for last 5 months and also loss of appetite with some fatty stools, I guess pancreatitis. I had body inflammation (High MCV and low folate and B12, for last 2 years). Is there a way I can benefit from this supplement. Please also suggest dosage.
Serrapeptase and Vitamin E are both indicated to help reverse your liver fibrosis, but it does not address either diabetes or chronic pancreatitis, if this is also present.
For these conditions it is your diet and lifestyle that needs to be addressed. Dr Cabot has written the defining book ‘Diabetes Type 2: You Can Reverse It Naturally’ that has an easy to follow diet and lifestyle regimen to enable you to live a life free of the debilitating degenerative effects of diabetes. Supplements to enhance the effects of the dietary program are Berberine, Glicemic Balance and Tyrosine.
High MCV, low folate and B12 are indications of intestinal inflammation leading to poor nutrient absorption and the recommended change of diet and Ultimate Gut Health may improve your health parameters.

Serrapeptase may not be the first supplement to reach for. Hashimoto’s Disease is best addressed by eating a diet free of gluten/dairy, processed foods and toxic fats like margarine or oxidized cooking seed oils. To balance your thyroid and immune system we recommend 2 Thyroid Health Capsules each day. Obesity creates a highly inflammatory body condition and Dr Cabot’s 15 Day Cleanse and Maintenance Program may be the most appropriate eating style for you. Lyme disease responds well to a bodily environment where inflammation is as low as possible. NAC is mucolytic and also a precursor to glutathione, the body’s strongest antioxidant so may be your best defense against the ravages of Lyme Disease, especially when added to the immune stabilizing components of Thyroid Health Capsules.

Serrapeptase is beneficial for removing residual scar tissue, although it may be quite hard after 5 years.
Whenever it is recommended, we also ask you to consider Vitamin E to soften the scar tissue and increase the efficacy of Serrapeptase.
Two capsules twice daily on an empty stomach is the usual therapeutic dose of Serrapeptase.
Serrapeptase is used to resolve aberrant protein tissue and does not damage cartilage, graft or bone.

I wanted to know if I'm allergic to aspirin and Nsaids am I able to take serrapeptase for inflammation seriously EVERYWHERE IN MY BODY ,fatty liver, and chronic adhesions that need surgical trimming annually for years now.. i'm upset drs never told me about this as an option I had to find out from a friend Why is so little known about it :(
Serrapeptase is clearly indicated for your adhesions although we cannot tell if you will react to it or not. For any scar tissue treatment, we recommend Vitamin E as an adjunct supplement to soften the scar tissue of the adhesions. Your allergies to aspirin and NSAIDS are very likely to be associated with your Fatty Liver. Fatty Liver generates inflammation throughout the body and it requires a different treatment strategy. We recommend you undertake Dr Cabot’s highly acclaimed 15 Day Cleanse and Maintenance Program, with Livatone Plus and Vitamin C to hasten liver healing and best possible function. The drugs that you have developed allergies to cause Leaky Gut and we invite you to download Dr Cabot's generously offered free e-book Ultimate Gut Health from this website.

When prescribing Serrapeptase, Dr Cabot recommends 250,000 spu twice daily as a therapeutic dose.
It is combined with Vitamin E to soften the scar tissue and make it far easier for Serrapeptase to resolve it.
Both of these supplements have the effect of reducing inflammation and this usually leads to reduced platelets in the blood, so care is to be taken with high doses, especially if taking blood thinning medication.
Kind regards
Victoria
Both Serrapeptase and Fish Oil are potent anti-inflammatories and as such may lower platelet levels in the blood.
This is associated with easy bruising and increased blood loss with skin breakage or trauma.
Taken in moderate amounts these two supplements work well together.
Easy bleeding and bruising are more likely when vitamin C is deficient.

120,000 SU of Serrapeptase is unlikely to be a sufficient dose to clear blocked arteries, and if you have been taking this dose for a considerable time boost it to 2 capsules twice daily until arteries are clear and then reduce to a maintenance dose of 2 capsules daily.

I had surgery in March 2019 and I have very painful uterus (now been diagnosed with adenomyosis) and scar tissue at the belly button and behind it. It’s so painful it’s hard to sit up straight as it presses on my stomach.
I have read about Serrapeptase, and I just purchased the Vitalzym product but it doesn’t seem to say how much is in it. I liked these as they are smaller pills as I have trouble swallowing larger pills. My questions are - do you know anything about this brand and how much is in each pill? It’s hard to figure out dosing when it doesn’t say. And also - I read that you can’t take turmeric as well as Serrapeptase? Is this true?
Does Serrapeptase really work for internal scar tissue? I was currently meeting with surgeons and pursuing surgery (and hysterectomy) to remove this hard lump - but wanted to try a natural approach too. Thank you!
Adenomyosis and Endometriosis both respond well to a low inflammatory diet as both these conditions exhibit autoimmune aspects.
Serrapeptase is very beneficial to digest the build up of scar tissue and the protein matrix that is characteristic of these conditions.
We are not aware of the product you purchased and we are surprised that there is no component levels on the label.
Both turmeric and serrapeptase are anti-inflammatory, which may be why your source of information suggested they are not to be taken together.
These problems, and heavier menses are often seen when progesterone levels are lower than normal and this tends to be more common after mid-30s.
To boost progesterone levels Dr Cabot prescribes Fem Pro.
Selenomune, NAC and Vitamin D are recommended for autoimmune conditions.
Kind regards
Victoria
Serrapeptase is probably not to be the most beneficial supplement for you. Both Pulmonary Sarcoidosis and Hashimoto’s Disease are autoimmune conditions and we encourage you to obtain a copy of Dr Cabot’s Autoimmune Disease book. Diet is very important and Dr Cabot’s 15 Day Cleanse and Maintenance Program is very suitable as an anti-autoimmune diet regimen.
Supplements are also important and we recommend
NAC 2capsules twice daily away from food with a large glass of water to avoid stomach distress
Selenomune 1 capsule daily
Ultimate Gut Health 1 scoopful in water before retiring each night.
Kind regards
Victoria
2 capsules daily of serrapeptase would be a good dose. You can definitely take NAC as well. Bio-identical progesterone cream is excellent for endometriosis.
Kind regards,
Margaret
If you can tolerate taking them on an empty stomach together then it is fine to do so.
Kind regards,
Louise
On Dec 20 you answered a question re Urethral stricture by recommending vitamin E. I had read somewhere that vitamin E alongside serrapeptase can thin the blood to much. Have you had experience of this?
Also, would serrapeptase work for kidney scarring?
Thank you,
Julia
Most patients can safely take vitamin E and serrapeptase. People on blood thinner should avoid them. If you experience nose bleeds or bruising, reduce the doses. We don’t have experience with serrapeptase for kidney scarring.
Kind regards,
Margaret
40,000 SPU serrapeptasee for nerve and disc pain issues but I'm worried about the one blood pressure pill I have been taking for years..Please advise.Thank You.
serrapeptase
There are no problematic interactions we are aware of. Take the serrapeptase on an empty stomach.

Margaret
2 capsules twice daily, away from food. It can reduce the scarring but is not likely to eliminate it.
Kind regards,
Margaret
I am currently suffering from thyroid eye disease. I am looking on taking selenium, serrapeptase, acetyl l carnitine and resveratrol. I would appreciate your opinion.
They are all very appropriate supplements. Vitamin D is also very helpful. Most people need 5000 IU daily. Diet changes are probably necessary, and healing leaky gut with Gut Health powder. There is helpful information in our book called Healing Autoimmune Disease.
Kind regards,
Margaret
We don’t have experience with topical serrapeptase. However, taking 200mcg of selenium (adult dose) daily is excellent for skin conditions due to viruses.
Kind regards,
Margaret
It’s best to take it at another time of day. Vitamin D and progesterone cream are excellent for fibroids too.
Kind regards,
Margaret
Unfortunately we don’t have any specific guidance we could give you. There have not been clinical trials done and we do not have patient experience in this matter. Serrapeptase is not a strong blood thinner in most people.
Kind regards,
Margaret
If taking serrapeptase delayed release capsules will food and other supplements interfere or cause issues throughout the day or it is fine if it’s passed through the stomach already? In your opinion is delayed release preferable or not? Also is there any danger in consuming alcohol if taking serrapeptase?
Thank you!
Delayed release is usually preferable because more of the serrapeptase gets absorbed. It is fine if it has passed through the stomach already. There are no interactions with alcohol.
Kind regards,
Louise
Could you please tell me me if you can take Serrapeptase at the same time as NAC?
Many Thanks Chris
Serrapeptase should be taken on an empty stomach. Some people get stomach upset when they take NAC on an empty stomach so we recommend taking this about 10 minutes before food. If you have no issues taking it on an empty stomach then you can take it with the serrapeptase.
Kind regards,
Louise
You would need to do it under your doctor’s supervision, with more thorough blood tests for blood clotting.
Kind regards,
Louise
Due to my mealtimes and needing a sufficiently empty stomach to take serrapeptase - I'm wondering if there is much difference between taking 2 capsules together in the morning and taking 2 capsules spread out one morning and one afternoon. I'd much prefer to take 2 capsules together in the morning but want to ensure it won't affect the results. I'm taking for internal scar tissue, not general inflammation.
Thank you very much.
It’s certainly fine to take 2 capsules together in the morning.
Kind regards,
Margaret
Urethral stricture occurs far more commonly in men but if you have a history of many UTIs it may be that you have scar tissue along your urethra. Inflammation increases the likelihood of it reoccurring.
Serrapeptase is of considerable benefit to resolve scar tissue and it is also anti-inflammatory.
Other supplementation is required and Dr Cabot prescribes
Vitamin E – 1 capsule twice daily, to soften scar tissue.
N-Acetyl-Cysteine (NAC 600mg) – 1 to 2 capsules twice daily
Selenomune Designer Energy – 1 capsule daily
We recommend you begin Dr Cabot’s acclaimed 15 Day Cleanse and Maintenance Program, which are highly anti-inflammatory.
Kind regards
Victoria
Thank you for your work.
Serrapeptase and Vitamin E are most valuable for cirrhosis.
For best possible liver function Dr Cabot also prescribes
Livatone Plus – 1 to 2 capsules twice daily.
N-Acetyl-Cysteine (NAC 600mg) – 1 to 2 capsules twice daily well away from food with a large glass of water, to avoid stomach upset.
Nattokinase is usually indicated to repair damage to the heart and blood vessels.
Kind regards
Victoria
Thanks
We recommend 2 capsules twice daily, to be taken well away from food.
We also recommend Selenomune to shrink the cyst.
Best wishes
Victoria
We aren’t aware of any research and do not have patient experience with this.
Kind regards,
Margaret
Yes serrapeptase should help. Avoiding dairy products and sugar and taking an iodine supplement can also help cysts.
Kind regards,
Louise
Cysts respond well to Serrapeptase and an anti-inflammatory diet and lifestyle.
There is much research into the use of Selenium’s ability to shrink cysts.

I’m curious what you suggest for painful, debilitating periods. (The pain is so severe I have to manage with Tordol injections). I have Adenomyosis and possibly endometriosis. I bleed for 10-11 days. I have a Mirena IUD so I’m not bleeding as horribly as I used to, but it’s long and exhausting. I just started taking Serrapeptase as it was recommended on an Adenomyosis support group. What are your other recommendations? I’m desperate.
Most women with adenomyosis and endometriosis, especially when coupled with heavy bleeding are considered to have estrogen dominance. This may occur because your liver is not able to metabolise the spent estrogens passing through it and so the blood level may rise considerably. It is now even more difficult because there are so many chemicals in the environment that mimic estrogens and add to the load.
Liver function is able to be boosted with Livatone Plus and NAC and a liver friendly diet.
Estrogen dominance can be countered by the use of bio-identical progesterone, at a double recommended dose.
The fibrosis and scar tissue that may have already occurred may be reversed with Serrapeptase.
Your long periods may be corrected with the above, unless you have a Vitamin K deficiency which is easily corrected.
Kind regards
Victoria
I am taking 120,000 unit 6 at night and 6 in the morning on empty stomach 4 hours before breakfast, is that ok . No side effects.
Serrpeptase is clearly indicated to assist your fallopian tubes to clear. Begin with 1 capsule for 3 days to determine if there is a sensitivity and then you may increase the dose gradually to finish at 2 capsules twice daily, always taken well away from meals.
Blocked fallopian tubes tend to clear faster with a totally dairy free diet.
Kind regards
Victoria
We don’t know of any literature that has studied the use of serrapeptase in your condition. It is probably fine to take, but please be monitored by your doctor.
Kind regards,
Margaret
Serrapeptase does not need to be taken with protease. It is a protein digesting enzyme so there is no need. Our serrapeptase capsules are enteric coated for release into the small intestine for optimal absorption.
Kind regards,
Margaret
I'm wondering if I can take 1) Indole-3-carbinol (I-C-3) and; 2) Active Hexose Correlated Compound (both for high-risk HPV); and 3) serrapeptase (for bile duct scar tissue) at the same time?
Thank you so much.
Yes it is fine and not a problem.
Kind regards,
Louise
That shouldn't interact with Serrapeptase.
Kind regards,
Louise
There shouldn't be any issue with eating vitamin-k containing foods unless you have a bleeding disorder.
Symptoms of the blood being excessively thin include bleeding gums, nose bleeds and easy bruising. You can keep an eye out for these symptoms.
kind regards,
Louise
No, it cannot. Glicemic Balance and Berberine are fantastic for that.
