Serrapeptase
Serrapeptase is an enzyme that was first discovered in the intestine of silkworms. This enzyme is necessary in order for the silkworm to dissolve the hard cocoon it is surrounded by, when it is ready to emerge as a moth. The silkworm also uses this enzyme to allow it to feed on tough mulberry leaves. These days, serrapeptase supplements are not derived from silkworms; the enzyme is derived from a natural fermentation process. Serrapeptase is a protease enzyme; that means it has the ability to digest protein. Research has shown this remarkable enzyme can help to dissolve non-living tissue in the body such as cysts, swellings, plaque and scar tissue.
Serrapeptase helps to reduce inflammation in the body
Excessive inflammation is a feature of just about every disease and is present in any condition where pain, fatigue and fluid retention are present. But what causes inflammation? These are the most common causes:
- Elevated blood sugar. Certainly diabetics experience a great deal of inflammation in their bodies because of elevated blood sugar, but you don’t have to be a diabetic to experience this. Regularly consuming sugar, grains and high glycemic load foods will flood your bloodstream with glucose. Sugar is sticky and it can bind to proteins in your body and damage them.
- Infections. Any type of bacterial, viral, fungal or parasitic infection raises inflammation because your immune cells produce massive quantities of inflammatory chemicals as they try to fight the infection. This is particularly a problem in chronic, long term infections.
- Food allergy, intolerance and sensitivity. Whenever you consume a food you are sensitive to, your body behaves as though you swallowed something harmful, such as a virus or bacteria. As your immune system tries to cope with this scenario, it produces a host of inflammatory chemicals. This can become a significant problem if you unknowingly eat this food(s) every day.
- Stress. Unfortunately the hormones your body produces while you are stressed cause inflammatory damage, free radical damage and a great deal of wear and tear to your body. Magnesium helps to counter some of this damage.
- Lack of sleep or poor quality sleep. Good solid sleep is one of the most powerful anti-inflammatory remedies there is, and it’s free and feels great. Unfortunately most people know this but try as they might, they can’t get good sleep consistently. Insomnia or just poor quality sleep is endemic in modern society.
- Lack of antioxidants in your diet. All of the various conditions listed above cause your body to use up vitamins, minerals and antioxidants at a much faster rate. The problem is, most people don’t replenish their bodies with nutrients sufficiently. Ideally you would consume a raw vegetable salad for lunch and dinner each day and include a glass of raw vegetable juice most days of the week.
- Injuries, accidents and surgery are a major physical stress on the body and these processes all generate a great volume of inflammatory chemicals. These inflammatory chemicals are very useful in acute conditions and are necessary for the recovery process. Unfortunately many patients are left with chronic pain, swelling and immobility because the inflammatory process has continued for too long. Serrapeptase is excellent for these people.
How Serrapeptase can help
Ideally you could reduce the level of inflammation in your body by addressing each of the points mentioned above. Unfortunately, this is not always possible and sometimes the source of inflammation cannot be identified and remains hidden.
Serrapeptase basically works by giving your insides a good clean up. Being a protein digesting enzyme, it helps to clear out protein deposits that are not serving a useful purpose in your body. It has anti-inflammatory, anti-oedemic (reduces fluid retention) and fibrinolytic activity (helps to break down blood clots). It can help to clear mucus, fluid, blood clots, debris and immune complexes from your body. In this way it helps to reduce pain, improve mobility and increase energy. Serrapeptase helps to keep arteries clean and clear because it reduces the inflammation in arteries which is what promotes cholesterol accumulation and narrowing of the arteries.
How should Serrapeptase be taken?
Serrapeptase must be taken on an empty stomach in order to obtain the systemic anti-inflammatory benefits. If you consume it with a meal, your body will use it to digest the food in your intestines. Therefore most people find it easiest to take serrapeptase first thing in the morning. You can eat half an hour later. A typical starting dose is between 125 000 and 250 000 IU per day.
The above statements have not been evaluated by the FDA and are not intended to diagnose, treat or cure any disease.

Would you recommend serrapeptase for chronic/daily migraines ? I am also taking magnesium, B2, coq10, NADH, feverfew— all recommended for migraines along with Maca & vitex to treat my hormonal migraines, ginger for nausea, as well as vitamin c & zinc for immunity. I do not use a preventative medication, I prefer a natural route, I use supplements instead. I also follow the heal your headache diet and gluten-free. Thank you for your help!
Serrapeptase is a potent anti-inflammatory enzyme that exerts valuable benefits for many who experience migraines.
It is important to ensure you are taking a well absorbed form of Magnesiumhttps://www.liverdoctor.com/magnesium-ultra-potent-powder-210-grams.html to help maintain arterial flexibility.
Equally important is an anti-inflammatory diet to reduce intestinal reactivity that may result in migraine initiation.

Serrapeptase is a valuable supplement to remove protective protein build-up in the body. It is essential to take Serrapeptase on an empty stomach with a large glass of water to avoid gastric upset or nausea.
When treating sinusitis there are two exemplary supplements and we suggest you begin taking BActoClear at a dose of 2 capsules three times daily with food to act as a natural antibiotic and NAC 2 capsules twice daily on an empty stomach with a large glass of water to avoid gastric upset and to take it away from Serrapeptase if you choose to keep taking both.
We also recommend you remove all dairy from your diet, because it is mucus forming and will promote the production of biofilms that are characteristic of Sinusitis.
Kind regards
Victoria
We have not heard that from other patients or customers.
Kind regards,
Margaret
What doses of Nattokinase and Serrapeptase should I take and should I take these two together? Will taking high doses increase the risk of bleeding?
I am not on blood thinners
Thanks
Colleen
Yes taking high doses of serrapeptase and nattokinase can thin the blood excessively. Some people get bruising or nose bleeds. An appropriate dose of serrapeptase would be two daily on an empty stomach.
Kind regards,
Margaret
It is definitely worth trying. It’s situations like these where serrapeptase excels.
Kind regards,
Margaret
N-acetyl cysteine is more specific for clearing congestion in the respiratory system. The dose is 2 capsules daily on an empty stomach. Eliminating gluten, dairy and sugar from your diet should help too.

Kind regards,
Margaret
Can I consume Natural Vitality Calm magnesium powder mix in water just before I take serrapeptase before I sleep? Will the serrapeptase nullify the effects of the magnesium mix? Thank You
Serrapeptase is a protein digesting enzyme, so there is no problem taking it with magnesium.
Kind regards,
Margaret
Most inflammation is a result of a diet that causes intestinal inflammation, and we recommend you remove all gluten, dairy and legumes from your diet for at least 3 months to determine if this is a substantial contributor to your health concerns.
Rather than Serrapeptase we recommend you begin a course of N-Acetyl-Cysteine https://www.liverdoctor.com/nac-n-acetyl-l-cysteine-600mg-90-capsules.html) to reduce inflammation and boost your depleted immune system. Accompany it with Selenommune https://www.liverdoctor.com/selenomune-designer-energy-100-capsules.html) to boost NAC effectiveness and bolster your ability to withstand potential infections.

Victoria
Can serrapeptase cure and eliminate liver and kidney cysts?
We could never claim that any supplement could 'cure' an ailment, but there is research to show that serrapeptase can help to break down cysts.
You could try it and see if it helps you.
Kind regards,
Louise
Thank you for your comment.
We’ve never experienced worsening in our patients, and we’re not aware of research stating it may aggravate telangiectasia.
Taking vitamin C and bioflavonoids should help you.
Kind regards,
Margaret
Thank you for your comment.
It’s impossible to say, as pain with intercourse is not a typical symptom of salpingitis.
Kind regards,
Margaret
Yes you’re correct. It’s fine to take serrapeptase.
Kind regards,
Margaret
As far as we know it has not been researched in breast feeding women, thus it is best avoided.

Margaret
I experience arthritis in my left knee. With this comes stuffness and swelling. After getting up, moving around, taking turmeric, calcium plus, fish oil, drinking a joint vibrance formula, and a hot shower, I am able to move easier. I also consume a capsule for hypertension. If the knee pain is extremely excruciating, I will take take two 600 milligrams tylenol. Yesterday, after reading about serrapeptase and nattokinse, I purcased both that are the Vitamin Shoppe brand. I am still reading the research on both. Which is best for inflammation and with the above list of supplements, is it safe to continue them on a routine after taking serrapeptase in the morning on an empty stomach?
Thanks so much for your feedback
We only have experience with serrapeptase for joint pain, not nattokinase. It is fine to take serrapeptase with your other supplements. You may find a gluten, dairy, sugar, nightshade and legume free diet may help. There is also helpful information in our book Healing Autoimmune Disease: A plan to help your immune system and reduce inflammation.
Kind regards,
Margaret
It would be fine to have lemon water with Serrapeptase.
Kind regards,
Louise
Can someone please tell me if I can take OXI bike 500mg and High Potency Serrapeptase, 120,000 SPU together because my gall bladder was removed 20 years ago and also got high cholesterol level. Thanks
After gallbladder removal it is very important to supplement with Ox Bile to promote the necessary absorption of good dietary fats and fat-soluble vitamins. Begin with 1 capsule during each meal, and if necessary, increase the dose to 2 capsules each meal.
Most gallbladder problems arise from a congested liver, and because you have high cholesterol your liver may still be functioning below its best.
Serrapeptase is beneficial for generalised inflammation in the body, and if you are experiencing joint or muscle pain, or raised blood pressure, or raised liver protein. Serrapeptase it to be taken well away from food with water to maximize its absorption.
For best liver health Dr Cabot prescribes
Livatone Plus – 1 to 2 capsules twice daily, to improve liver function.https://www.liverdoctor.com/livatone-plus.html
N-Acetyl-Cysteine (NAC 600mg) – 1 to 2 capsules twice daily well away from food with a large glass of water, if any upset occurs, take at the beginning of your meals. This supplement is the precursor nutrient of glutathione; the body’s strongest anti-oxidant and most potent detoxifier.https://www.liverdoctor.com/nac-n-acetyl-l-cysteine-600mg-90-capsules.html

Victoria
We recommend starting on 1 capsules twice daily on an empty stomach.
Serrapeptase can be very effective for scar tissue of any kind.
Kind regards,
Louise
Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency is an inherited disorder, so it cannot be cured but its progression can certainly be retarded so the amount of damage that it can do to the lungs is reduced.,
The lungs are the most common site of organ damage, although the liver can also be affected.
It is most important to ensure both an anti-inflammatory lifestyle, to protect the lungs and an anti-inflammatory diet to reduce stress in the liver and throughout your body.
Exercise is important for lung health but it is important to ensure that inhaled air is as clean as possible, so keep to low traffic areas and avoid all artificial aerosols whether they be solvents, perfumes, insect sprays, or air fresheners and definitely no smoking. If any of these are unavoidable there are facemasks that can filter out offending vapors.
Diet is very important and we recommend a diet that excludes inflammogens like sugars, gluten, dairy, damaged fats, and processed foods.
NAC is the precursor to the body’s most potent antioxidant and detoxifier, and it concentrates in the lungs to protect them from inflammatory processes that can increase Neutrophil elastase activity.
Selenium provides an added anti-inflammatory weapon to your armory and Selenomune Designer Energy strengthens the protection and boosts the production of glutathione from NAC.
Kind regards
Victoria
Sorry we aren't familiar with the use of serrapeptase for Malformation chiari. It could be helpful for gallbladder polyps.
Kind regards,
Louise
After about 9 days using serrapeptase for nerve inflammation, I began noticing a terrible taste in my mouth that progressively worsened. I stopped taking it. I also started belching a lot and although the bad taste started to improve, I began to get a lot of nausea and reduced appetite over the next few days. I also noticed skin flushing, some dizziness and some head pangs. I wanted to ask if this could be due to me not having a gallbladder and if others have experienced any similar symptoms.
Thank you.
This is not something we typically see in our patients who take serrapeptase, and many of them have had their gallbladder removed. There is no contraindication for serrapeptase and lack of gallbladder. You may want to stop serrapeptase and resume at a lower dose.
Kind regards,
Margaret
We recommend taking Serrapeptase 2 hours away from any medication.
It is best taken away from food so 2 hours after dinner would be ok.
You can take 1 capsule twice daily.
You would also benefit from taking the Breast Health capsules:https://www.liverdoctor.com/breast-health-60-capsules.html
Kind regards,
Louise
Both can be taken, separated. There are no negative interactions.
Kind regards,
Margaret
I would like to try serrapeptase for hypertrophic scarring around my nipple from breast surgery. I have silicon implants - will serrapeptase affect the implants or make them dissolve since it targets breaking down non living tissue? Or is it safe to take?
Serrapeptase isn’t strong enough to affect the implants. There is some research that fish oil can specifically reduce scarring related to breast implants.
Kind regards,
Margaret
My mom (55 years old) has a simple liver cyst (not hydatid cyst). Would you recommend the Serrapeptase ( Anti-Inflammatory) for her. If yes, how much Serrapeptase she can take on a daily basis. Thank you
Yes serrapeptase would be beneficial at a dose of 2-4 capsules daily.
This article on Liver Cysts has more indepth information:https://www.liverdoctor.com/liver-cysts/
Kind regards,
Louise
We don't have experience with this unfortunately.
Kind regards,
Louise
Yes, serrapeptase can help with internal scar tissue. We can't guarentee it will get rid of it completely but there is a good chance it will help.
We recommend 1 capsule twice daily on an empty stomach.
Kind regards,
Louise
That could be a side effect. We suggest stopping serrapeptase until those symptoms disappear and then try starting it again at one capsule daily, building your way up to a higher dose and see how your body reacts.
Kind regards,
Louise
I am taking 80,000ug serrapeptase two a day for my blocked fallopian tubes it's been 3 weeks I have been taking this .. how long I have to take this to clear my fallopian tubes and adhesions in my pelvic area. How long I have to consume this and how will I get to know if it's working or not.
Thanks,
Savneet
Serrapeptase alone may not work. Poppy seed oil may be needed:https://www.newscientist.com/article/2131665-flushing-fallopian-tubes-with-poppy-seed-oil-boosts-fertility/
Kind regards,
Margaret
I think you will find that Serraprptase is more of a blood cleaner. The real blood thinner is Nattokinase. I take them both, 250,000IU of Serrapeptase and 4,000FU of Nattokinase daily, instead of Sintrom (similar to Warfarin) and feel great and healthy.
I was diagnosed with Polymyalgia Rheumatica (PMR) 3 months ago. My doctor put me on 15mg Prednisone. I dont like taking steroids due to the side affects so am taking natural supplements that will help my immune system and support my adrenal glands. With the help of my Doctor I am now on 7mg on Prednisone but unfortunateyly some of the symptoms have returned. I expected this to happen as I know PMR can take many months to clear. I have just started taking Serrapeptase to reduce the inflamation but am having difficulty working out when best to take it - especially as one of the supplements that will help improve my immune system has to also be taken on an empty stomach. Current dosage is 2x125,000iu 3 times a day. I am going for a high dose as I hope to quickly reduce some of the symptoms so that I can taperthe prednisone by 1mg every 2/3 weeks. Can you please advise whether it can be just as beneficial to take 2 or 3 tablets twice daily instead of 2 3 times daily. Any advice would be gratefully received
Thank you for your comment.
Serrapeptase will work best when taken away from food. Whenever you are able to fit it in around your eating schedule is fine.
If you would prefer to take 3 caps twice daily instead that should be fine. Just start on a lower dose and build up to a higher dose as some people experience stomach upset from Serrapeptase.
Kind regards,
Louise
Yes serrapaptase would be excellent for you to take. Please discuss with your doctor first if you are taking a blood thinner.
Kind regards,
Louise
So should I avoid a curtain vitamin or is it fine ? And does constipation effect the absorption of serrapeptase?, Thanks
You just have to be careful taking serrapeptase with other supplements that have blood thinning effects like fish oil and vitamin E.
It really depends on the dose of what you are taking, and also your unique constitution as to whether they may thin your blood excessively. Bruising and nose bleeds are indicators of excessive blood thinning.
Kind regards,
Louise
Yes serrapeptase is safe but stick to one capsule daily on an empty stomach.
Kind regards,
Margaret
Breaks from serrapeptase are not required. Most of our patients have long term inflammatory conditions, and it helps to keep inflammation down.
We are not aware of studies of its long term use.
For benign cystic breasts we recommend 1 capsule twice daily on an empty stomach. Selenium, iodine and vitamin D are also very helpful. They are combined in Breast Health capsules:https://www.liverdoctor.com/breast-health-60-capsules.html
Kind regards,
Louise
Our serrapeptase supplement contains 125,000 spu per capsule. If you purchased a different brand you would need to contact that company directly to check the conversion. Generally speaking 10mg = 20,000 spu.
Kind regards,
Louise
So Should I avoid all these as they do thin blood:
-turmeric
-bromelain
- Vitamin e
- fish oil
- ginger, garlic
- cordyceps
- Boswellia
-vitamin k2mk7
Thanks for the response in advance , I have spoken to my doctor who didn’t even know what serapeptase was.
It's always good to check.
All of the things you listed can be taken with serrapeptase. Fish oil, garlic and vitamin E are the strongest blood thinners. It really depends on the dose of all those things you are taking, and also your unique constitution as to whether they may thin your blood excessively. Bruising and nose bleeds are indicators of excessive blood thinning.
Kind regards,
Margaret
Yes, that is appropriate. If HBP is high blood pressure, magnesium is also very helpful.
Kind regards,
Margaret
Vomiting is not an expected side effect of Serrapeptase.
Try starting with one capsule of Serrapeptase daily and see how you react. If you can tolerate this, after a few days increase to one capsules twice daily and work your way up to a higher dose.
If you experience vomiting again cease use. You can call our office and speak with our naturopath Christine on +1 (623) 334-3232.
You might benefit from also supplementing with Glutamine to soothe and heal the gut lining:https://www.liverdoctor.com/glutamine-plus-colostrum-powder-500grams.html
Kind regards,
Louise
It is not recommended to take them both together because of the blood thinning effects.
It is always best to check with your own doctor.
Kind regard,
Louise
I have had the same reaction as William when taking serrapeptase. The first time I took before bed on an empty stomach and then felt sick all the next day. I took courage a week later but took 2 hours before breakfast, 30 minutes after breakfast I had fever, severe vomiting and severe Diarrhoea. I was at work at the time and it was several hours before I could even drive home. The sickness and Diarrhoea happened every 10 minutes. Have since recovered but am scared to take serrapeptase again, I am trying to get rid of bursitis in my left hip which is very painful at night and I don't sleep well. any advice would be appreciated.
thanks
Gaynor
It is such a shame that you have reacted so severely to Serrapeptase.
Another plan of action is to take active steps to reduce inflammation in your body and the first place to look is the digestive tract because this is where most inflammation begins.
We recommend you begin an anti-inflammatory diet and lifestyle, and we are delighted to let you know that Dr Cabot’s highly acclaimed 15 Day Cleanse is available and provides you with two weeks to begin your journey toward improved overall health and function, utilising both supplements and a tasty, easy to prepare dietary regimen. This is an anti-inflammatory program and the supplements are immune boosting, body alkalinising and gut healing.https://www.liverdoctor.com/15-day-cleanse.html
After completing the Cleanse, we recommend you remain on this style of eating and you can then begin the Maintenance plan.https://www.liverdoctor.com/dr-cabot-ultimate-maintenance-plan.html
To further reduce inflammation and aid healing, Dr Cabot prescribes
N-Acetyl-Cysteine (NAC 600mg) – 1 to 2 capsules twice daily well away from food with a large glass of water, if any upset occurs, take at the beginning of your meals. This supplement works well with Livatone Plus to get your liver better faster. This supplement is the precursor nutrient of glutathione; the body’s strongest anti-oxidant and potent detoxifier.https://www.liverdoctor.com/nac-n-acetyl-l-cysteine-600mg-90-capsules.html

Serrapeptase does thin the blood. In some people that can produce excessive bruising. Maybe the one bruise is unrelated and something you did while sleeping. If more bruises appear you may need to reduce your dose.
Kind regards,
Margaret
Recently I took it and it made me feel nauseated. So I didn't take it again for several weeks. When I took it again - in the morning on an empty stomach as always - i was gripped by horrible pain and vomiting. I had no food in my stomach but I threw up everything my body could squeeze out for nearly 3 hours.
Any idea why this would suddenly impact me this way? I am so bummed but I don t think I can ever take this again.
This is a very unusual response. It is best to see your doctor and maybe a gastroenterologist as well. There could be inflammation in your digestive lining.
Kind regards,
Margaret
Does Serapeptase help reduce cholesterol and can it cure carpel tunnel? Please advise on dosage and if it can be taken with iron supplements, B vitamins, magnesium? (At same or different times of the day)
Kind regards
Suzanne
Serrapeptase can be taken with all those supplements but it’s best on an empty stomach and they are best with food. It helps to reduce cholesterol deposits in arteries, but berberine is better for reducing overall cholesterol levels-https://www.liverdoctor.com/berberine-500mg-60ct.html
Serrapeptase has helped carpel tunnel for many of our patients. A good dose would be 1 capsule twice daily on an empty stomach.
Kind regards,
Margaret
I can't seem to find serrapeptase on your site to buy? Where would it be? Thanks
Veronica
You can purchase it here:
https://www.liverdoctor.com/serrapeptase-250-000-iu-per-two-caps.html
Kind regards,
Louise
Serrapeptase works best on an empty stomach. When taken with food it will not work as well. If you can tolerate it hours before a meal then this would be fine to do so. Some people get an upset stomach from serrapeptase and may need to take it closer to food.
Kind regards,
Louise
Can I take serrapeptase and vitex together?
It helps reduce inflammation and that seems to have helped your thyroid gland. Lowering the dosage means your thyroid is able to manufacture more hormones.
Kind regards,
Margaret
What would you recommend, i have pcos and one blocked felopian tube. Been ttc for almost 10years and no luck.
Thank you for your enquiry.
PCOS makes conception more difficult and having one tube blocked also reduces your chances.
We recommend a low carb, anti-inflammatory diet for PCOS and Dr Cabot prescribes her 15 Day Cleanse to begin the process, and the Maintenance Plan to continue as a long term strategy.
Serrapeptase is well indicated to clear your fallopian tube. You may find the Cleanse style diet will make this happen quicker.

Is it safe to take folic acid supplements with Serrapeptase( korzin)
There are no known interactions between folic acid and Serrapeptase.
Kind regards,
Louise
Does it causes constipation or leaving it causes constipation
Constipation is not a common symptom on Serrapeptase.
Are you currently taking it and experiencing constipation?
If so - Every one is unique and reacts to things differently. We suggest stopping Serrapeptase until the constipation resolves, and then start taking it again and see if you get constipated again.
Ensure you are drinking plenty of water.
Kind regards,
Louise
