Serrapeptase
Serrapeptase is an enzyme that was first discovered in the intestine of silkworms. This enzyme is necessary in order for the silkworm to dissolve the hard cocoon it is surrounded by, when it is ready to emerge as a moth. The silkworm also uses this enzyme to allow it to feed on tough mulberry leaves. These days, serrapeptase supplements are not derived from silkworms; the enzyme is derived from a natural fermentation process. Serrapeptase is a protease enzyme; that means it has the ability to digest protein. Research has shown this remarkable enzyme can help to dissolve non-living tissue in the body such as cysts, swellings, plaque and scar tissue.
Serrapeptase helps to reduce inflammation in the body
Excessive inflammation is a feature of just about every disease and is present in any condition where pain, fatigue and fluid retention are present. But what causes inflammation? These are the most common causes:
- Elevated blood sugar. Certainly diabetics experience a great deal of inflammation in their bodies because of elevated blood sugar, but you don’t have to be a diabetic to experience this. Regularly consuming sugar, grains and high glycemic load foods will flood your bloodstream with glucose. Sugar is sticky and it can bind to proteins in your body and damage them.
- Infections. Any type of bacterial, viral, fungal or parasitic infection raises inflammation because your immune cells produce massive quantities of inflammatory chemicals as they try to fight the infection. This is particularly a problem in chronic, long term infections.
- Food allergy, intolerance and sensitivity. Whenever you consume a food you are sensitive to, your body behaves as though you swallowed something harmful, such as a virus or bacteria. As your immune system tries to cope with this scenario, it produces a host of inflammatory chemicals. This can become a significant problem if you unknowingly eat this food(s) every day.
- Stress. Unfortunately the hormones your body produces while you are stressed cause inflammatory damage, free radical damage and a great deal of wear and tear to your body. Magnesium helps to counter some of this damage.
- Lack of sleep or poor quality sleep. Good solid sleep is one of the most powerful anti-inflammatory remedies there is, and it’s free and feels great. Unfortunately most people know this but try as they might, they can’t get good sleep consistently. Insomnia or just poor quality sleep is endemic in modern society.
- Lack of antioxidants in your diet. All of the various conditions listed above cause your body to use up vitamins, minerals and antioxidants at a much faster rate. The problem is, most people don’t replenish their bodies with nutrients sufficiently. Ideally you would consume a raw vegetable salad for lunch and dinner each day and include a glass of raw vegetable juice most days of the week.
- Injuries, accidents and surgery are a major physical stress on the body and these processes all generate a great volume of inflammatory chemicals. These inflammatory chemicals are very useful in acute conditions and are necessary for the recovery process. Unfortunately many patients are left with chronic pain, swelling and immobility because the inflammatory process has continued for too long. Serrapeptase is excellent for these people.
How Serrapeptase can help
Ideally you could reduce the level of inflammation in your body by addressing each of the points mentioned above. Unfortunately, this is not always possible and sometimes the source of inflammation cannot be identified and remains hidden.
Serrapeptase basically works by giving your insides a good clean up. Being a protein digesting enzyme, it helps to clear out protein deposits that are not serving a useful purpose in your body. It has anti-inflammatory, anti-oedemic (reduces fluid retention) and fibrinolytic activity (helps to break down blood clots). It can help to clear mucus, fluid, blood clots, debris and immune complexes from your body. In this way it helps to reduce pain, improve mobility and increase energy. Serrapeptase helps to keep arteries clean and clear because it reduces the inflammation in arteries which is what promotes cholesterol accumulation and narrowing of the arteries.
How should Serrapeptase be taken?
Serrapeptase must be taken on an empty stomach in order to obtain the systemic anti-inflammatory benefits. If you consume it with a meal, your body will use it to digest the food in your intestines. Therefore most people find it easiest to take serrapeptase first thing in the morning. You can eat half an hour later. A typical starting dose is between 125 000 and 250 000 IU per day.

I had surgery in March 2019 and I have very painful uterus (now been diagnosed with adenomyosis) and scar tissue at the belly button and behind it. It’s so painful it’s hard to sit up straight as it presses on my stomach.
I have read about Serrapeptase, and I just purchased the Vitalzym product but it doesn’t seem to say how much is in it. I liked these as they are smaller pills as I have trouble swallowing larger pills. My questions are - do you know anything about this brand and how much is in each pill? It’s hard to figure out dosing when it doesn’t say. And also - I read that you can’t take turmeric as well as Serrapeptase? Is this true?
Does Serrapeptase really work for internal scar tissue? I was currently meeting with surgeons and pursuing surgery (and hysterectomy) to remove this hard lump - but wanted to try a natural approach too. Thank you!
Adenomyosis and Endometriosis both respond well to a low inflammatory diet as both these conditions exhibit autoimmune aspects.
Serrapeptase is very beneficial to digest the build up of scar tissue and the protein matrix that is characteristic of these conditions.
We are not aware of the product you purchased and we are surprised that there is no component levels on the label.
Both turmeric and serrapeptase are anti-inflammatory, which may be why your source of information suggested they are not to be taken together.
These problems, and heavier menses are often seen when progesterone levels are lower than normal and this tends to be more common after mid-30s.
To boost progesterone levels Dr Cabot prescribes Fem Pro.
Selenomune, NAC and Vitamin D are recommended for autoimmune conditions.
Kind regards
Victoria
Serrapeptase is probably not to be the most beneficial supplement for you. Both Pulmonary Sarcoidosis and Hashimoto’s Disease are autoimmune conditions and we encourage you to obtain a copy of Dr Cabot’s Autoimmune Disease book. Diet is very important and Dr Cabot’s 15 Day Cleanse and Maintenance Program is very suitable as an anti-autoimmune diet regimen.
Supplements are also important and we recommend
NAC 2capsules twice daily away from food with a large glass of water to avoid stomach distress
Selenomune 1 capsule daily
Ultimate Gut Health 1 scoopful in water before retiring each night.
Kind regards
Victoria
2 capsules daily of serrapeptase would be a good dose. You can definitely take NAC as well. Bio-identical progesterone cream is excellent for endometriosis.
Kind regards,
Margaret
If you can tolerate taking them on an empty stomach together then it is fine to do so.
Kind regards,
Louise
On Dec 20 you answered a question re Urethral stricture by recommending vitamin E. I had read somewhere that vitamin E alongside serrapeptase can thin the blood to much. Have you had experience of this?
Also, would serrapeptase work for kidney scarring?
Thank you,
Julia
Most patients can safely take vitamin E and serrapeptase. People on blood thinner should avoid them. If you experience nose bleeds or bruising, reduce the doses. We don’t have experience with serrapeptase for kidney scarring.
Kind regards,
Margaret
40,000 SPU serrapeptasee for nerve and disc pain issues but I'm worried about the one blood pressure pill I have been taking for years..Please advise.Thank You.
serrapeptase
There are no problematic interactions we are aware of. Take the serrapeptase on an empty stomach.
kind regards,
Margaret
2 capsules twice daily, away from food. It can reduce the scarring but is not likely to eliminate it.
Kind regards,
Margaret
I am currently suffering from thyroid eye disease. I am looking on taking selenium, serrapeptase, acetyl l carnitine and resveratrol. I would appreciate your opinion.
They are all very appropriate supplements. Vitamin D is also very helpful. Most people need 5000 IU daily. Diet changes are probably necessary, and healing leaky gut with Gut Health powder. There is helpful information in our book called Healing Autoimmune Disease.
Kind regards,
Margaret
We don’t have experience with topical serrapeptase. However, taking 200mcg of selenium (adult dose) daily is excellent for skin conditions due to viruses.
Kind regards,
Margaret
It’s best to take it at another time of day. Vitamin D and progesterone cream are excellent for fibroids too.
Kind regards,
Margaret
Unfortunately we don’t have any specific guidance we could give you. There have not been clinical trials done and we do not have patient experience in this matter. Serrapeptase is not a strong blood thinner in most people.
Kind regards,
Margaret
If taking serrapeptase delayed release capsules will food and other supplements interfere or cause issues throughout the day or it is fine if it’s passed through the stomach already? In your opinion is delayed release preferable or not? Also is there any danger in consuming alcohol if taking serrapeptase?
Thank you!
Delayed release is usually preferable because more of the serrapeptase gets absorbed. It is fine if it has passed through the stomach already. There are no interactions with alcohol.
Kind regards,
Louise
Could you please tell me me if you can take Serrapeptase at the same time as NAC?
Many Thanks Chris
Serrapeptase should be taken on an empty stomach. Some people get stomach upset when they take NAC on an empty stomach so we recommend taking this about 10 minutes before food. If you have no issues taking it on an empty stomach then you can take it with the serrapeptase.
Kind regards,
Louise
You would need to do it under your doctor’s supervision, with more thorough blood tests for blood clotting.
Kind regards,
Louise
Due to my mealtimes and needing a sufficiently empty stomach to take serrapeptase - I'm wondering if there is much difference between taking 2 capsules together in the morning and taking 2 capsules spread out one morning and one afternoon. I'd much prefer to take 2 capsules together in the morning but want to ensure it won't affect the results. I'm taking for internal scar tissue, not general inflammation.
Thank you very much.
It’s certainly fine to take 2 capsules together in the morning.
Kind regards,
Margaret
Urethral stricture occurs far more commonly in men but if you have a history of many UTIs it may be that you have scar tissue along your urethra. Inflammation increases the likelihood of it reoccurring.
Serrapeptase is of considerable benefit to resolve scar tissue and it is also anti-inflammatory.
Other supplementation is required and Dr Cabot prescribes
Vitamin E – 1 capsule twice daily, to soften scar tissue.
N-Acetyl-Cysteine (NAC 600mg) – 1 to 2 capsules twice daily
Selenomune Designer Energy – 1 capsule daily
We recommend you begin Dr Cabot’s acclaimed 15 Day Cleanse and Maintenance Program, which are highly anti-inflammatory.
Kind regards
Victoria
Thank you for your work.
Serrapeptase and Vitamin E are most valuable for cirrhosis.
For best possible liver function Dr Cabot also prescribes
Livatone Plus – 1 to 2 capsules twice daily.
N-Acetyl-Cysteine (NAC 600mg) – 1 to 2 capsules twice daily well away from food with a large glass of water, to avoid stomach upset.
Nattokinase is usually indicated to repair damage to the heart and blood vessels.
Kind regards
Victoria
Thanks
We recommend 2 capsules twice daily, to be taken well away from food.
We also recommend Selenomune to shrink the cyst.
Best wishes
Victoria
We aren’t aware of any research and do not have patient experience with this.
Kind regards,
Margaret
Yes serrapeptase should help. Avoiding dairy products and sugar and taking an iodine supplement can also help cysts.
Kind regards,
Louise
Cysts respond well to Serrapeptase and an anti-inflammatory diet and lifestyle.
There is much research into the use of Selenium’s ability to shrink cysts.
Kind regards
Victoria
I’m curious what you suggest for painful, debilitating periods. (The pain is so severe I have to manage with Tordol injections). I have Adenomyosis and possibly endometriosis. I bleed for 10-11 days. I have a Mirena IUD so I’m not bleeding as horribly as I used to, but it’s long and exhausting. I just started taking Serrapeptase as it was recommended on an Adenomyosis support group. What are your other recommendations? I’m desperate.
Most women with adenomyosis and endometriosis, especially when coupled with heavy bleeding are considered to have estrogen dominance. This may occur because your liver is not able to metabolise the spent estrogens passing through it and so the blood level may rise considerably. It is now even more difficult because there are so many chemicals in the environment that mimic estrogens and add to the load.
Liver function is able to be boosted with Livatone Plus and NAC and a liver friendly diet.
Estrogen dominance can be countered by the use of bio-identical progesterone, at a double recommended dose.
The fibrosis and scar tissue that may have already occurred may be reversed with Serrapeptase.
Your long periods may be corrected with the above, unless you have a Vitamin K deficiency which is easily corrected.
Kind regards
Victoria
I am taking 120,000 unit 6 at night and 6 in the morning on empty stomach 4 hours before breakfast, is that ok . No side effects.
Serrpeptase is clearly indicated to assist your fallopian tubes to clear. Begin with 1 capsule for 3 days to determine if there is a sensitivity and then you may increase the dose gradually to finish at 2 capsules twice daily, always taken well away from meals.
Blocked fallopian tubes tend to clear faster with a totally dairy free diet.
Kind regards
Victoria
We don’t know of any literature that has studied the use of serrapeptase in your condition. It is probably fine to take, but please be monitored by your doctor.
Kind regards,
Margaret
Serrapeptase does not need to be taken with protease. It is a protein digesting enzyme so there is no need. Our serrapeptase capsules are enteric coated for release into the small intestine for optimal absorption.
Kind regards,
Margaret
I'm wondering if I can take 1) Indole-3-carbinol (I-C-3) and; 2) Active Hexose Correlated Compound (both for high-risk HPV); and 3) serrapeptase (for bile duct scar tissue) at the same time?
Thank you so much.
Yes it is fine and not a problem.
Kind regards,
Louise
That shouldn't interact with Serrapeptase.
Kind regards,
Louise
There shouldn't be any issue with eating vitamin-k containing foods unless you have a bleeding disorder.
Symptoms of the blood being excessively thin include bleeding gums, nose bleeds and easy bruising. You can keep an eye out for these symptoms.
kind regards,
Louise
No, it cannot. Glicemic Balance and Berberine are fantastic for that.
Kind regards,
Margaret
Rather than starting with Serrapeptase for your autoimmune conditions, we strongly recommend you obtain a copy of Dr Cabot's ground-breaking book ‘Healing Autoimmune Disease – A plan to help your immune system and reduce inflammation’ and follow the protocol to help reduce your antibodies and symptoms.
As the gut heals the rest of the body follows. You are presently taking very strong medications but Serrapeptase is not going to substitute for them unfortunately.
Having both atherosclerosis and gall bladder removal indicates that your liver is struggling with your present medication load and your present diet.
You can expect the greatest benefit from the following supplementation that Dr Cabot prescribes for you
Selenomune Designer Energy - 1 capsule daily to increase your selenium levels to lower autoimmune antibody levels and reduce autoimmune disease activity.
N-Acetyl-Cysteine (NAC 600mg) – 1 capsule daily well away from food with a large glass of water, to avoid stomach upset. After 1 week increase the dose to 1 capsule twice daily. This supplement is the precursor nutrient of glutathione; the body’s strongest anti-oxidant and most potent detoxifier.
Vitamin C acid free (esterified) - Vitamin C acid free (esterified) continuous release, 100 vegan tablets. This supplement also provides a further source of calcium. These potent vitamin C tablets are ideal for those with sensitive stomachs as they contain the non-acidic form of vitamin C. Vitamin C supports healthy immune function, and enhances internal healing. Vitamin C is essential for healthy strong blood vessels.
Kind regards
Victoria
I have a bartholin cyst that has been here for over a month. Not abscess. Could serrapeptase 120,000 help it drain naturally? If so, how many times a day should I take it? Thanks.
Serrapeptase is clearly indicated for your cyst. Begin with 1 capsule for 3 days to ensure no sensitivity and then gradually increase dosage to 2 capsules twice daily, always taken well away from food.
The cysts form when the ducts from the Bartholin gland become blocked and to reduce the thickness of the gland fluid we recommend you limit dairy food to a little each day or eliminate it completely.
Kind regards
Victoria
Our Serrapeptase contains 125,000 SU per capsule :)
Kind regards,
Louise
We don’t know of any research and don’t have clinical experience with serrapeptase for that purpose.
Kind regards,
Margaret
Can serrapepase and nattokinase safely be taken along with HRT or will they dissolve and offset therapy? I'm currently on Estrogen injected pellets, oral Progesterone and NP Thyroid.
It is fine to take serrapeptase and nattokinase with hormone therapy. Just take the enzymes on an empty stomach away from the hormones.
Kind regards,
Margaret
I attempted to leave a comment earlier but my computer crashed so I'm not sure if the comment was received. I apologize if you receive this comment twice.
My naturopathic doctor prescribed 120,000 su of Serrapeptase to be taken before bed. My experience was not pleasant to say the least. , I had an anxiety attack, jitters , insomnia and felt as if my throat was closing over and my tinnitus has worsened, all from one dose. Is the dosage to high? I have tried contacting my naturopath but haven't heard back as of yet. I'm not sure if I should cease taking this supplement? I have read the benefits of Serrapeptase but can't seem to find anything about side effects.
It sounds like you may have had an allergic reaction. This is not a normal response to serrapeptase. You may have reacted to something the capsule is made of. It wasn’t necessarily the serrapeptase. You should probably cease taking it until you hear back from your naturopathoc doctor.
Kind regards,
Margaret
Yes they are fine to take together.
Kind regards,
Margaret
Yes that's safe.
Kind regards,
Margaret
Yes, that should be helpful. Taking 200mcg of selenium daily, as in Selenomunecapsules is very good for thyroid eye disease too.
Kind regards,
Margaret
Will serrapeptase help?
Can it irritate mucosal lining if oesophagus?
Thanks
Gail
Serrapeptase probably won’t help. Gut Health powder, a grain and dairy free, low FODMAP diet should help.
Kind regards,
Margaret
I am suffering from hypersensitive
pneoumonitis. Will serrapeptase be of any help. If yes, what should be the dosage? Thanking you in advance
Yes it should help to reduce scarring. The dose is 2 capsules daily on an empty stomach
Kind regards,
Margaret
Yes, it could help with this. It depends how bad the scar tissue is.
Kind regards,
Louise
It is best to continue taking serrapeptase until the cyst has completely cleared.
Kind regards,
Margaret
It would be fine to take liposomal vitamin C with serrapeptase because serrapeptase is a protein-digesting enzyme, and liposomal C doesn’t contain protein, so they are compatible.
Kind regards,
Margaret
Serrapeptase is very well indicated to reduce the scar tissue in your bile duct.
It is very important to keep your liver and immune system in tip top condition to guard against return of your cancer, and we recommend
Livatone Plus – 1 to 2 capsules twice daily, to improve liver function.
N-Acetyl-Cysteine (NAC 600mg) – 1 to 2 capsules twice daily well away from food with a large glass of water, to avoid stomach upset. This supplement is the precursor nutrient of glutathione; the body’s strongest anti-oxidant and most potent detoxifier. This product has been extensively researched and acclaimed as a potent mucolytic agent (destroys biofilms that microorganisms hide in).
MSM + Vitamin C – ½ to 1 teaspoon twice daily in vegetable juice or water to reduce oxidation, inflammation and boost liver health.
Another important factor to keep in mind is that high sugar in the blood may provide food for the bacteria you are requiring antibiotics for. We invite you to download Dr Cabot’s generously offered free e-book your athttps://www.liverdoctor.com/the-vital-principles-of-liver-cleansing-free-download/ for your knowledge and treatment.
Kind regards
Victoria
Serrapeptase is not that strong. It won’t dissolve cartilage.
Kind regards,
Margaret
Why are you taking Serrapeptase?
The reaction you are having seems like a hyper histamine reaction.
To calm, heal and soothe you digestive tract and reduce inflammation that stimulates white blood cells to overproduce histamine, please take Ultimate Gut Health – 1 scoop once to twice daily.
Kind regards
Victoria
Peripheral neuropathies may have many causes, so it is very important to identify what may be the cause and remove aggravating factors and put active strategies into place to reinstate the integrity of nerves.
Many cases of neuropathy arise from blood sugar dysregulation and this can be reversed if strict measures are taken to restrict the amount of sugars and starches consumed.
Supplements are very beneficial and because Serrapeptase is a potent anti-inflammatory it can reduce the pain while nerve healing is occurring. Begin taking it with a single capsule daily to ensure you can tolerate it and gradually increase the dosage to 2 capsules twice daily well away from meals.
Dr Cabot also prescribes you
Magnesium Ultrapotent – ½ teaspoon twice daily in a little water.https://www.liverdoctor.com/magnesium-ultra-potent-powder-210-grams.html
Berberine – 1 capsule three times daily. To balance blood glucose, lower cholesterol and triglycerides, reduce anxiety, alleviate depression, and support a healthy intestinal flora.https://www.liverdoctor.com//berberine-500mg-60ct.html
You may also have liver congestion or a Fatty Liver so please have an abdominal ultrasound; we have many articles dealing with Fatty Liver.
Kind regards
Victoria
What are you taking it for and how long have you been taking it?
Kind regards,
Louise
People who experience menstrual spotting or heavier bleeding are usually too low in vitamin K2. Taking a supplement should correct it.
Kind regards,
Margaret
Thank you,
Pam
No serrapeptase is not powerful enough to affect your valve.
Kind regards,
Margaret
