Celiac Disease Doubles The Risk Of Coronary Artery Disease
You probably don’t associate celiac disease with heart problems, but research has shown that people with celiac disease are at significantly higher risk of suffering a heart attack. This latest research was presented at the American College of Cardiology's 63rd Annual Scientific Session. Researchers analysed the health records of patients from 13 different healthcare centers between January 1999 and September 2013. From a total of almost 22.4 million patients, 24,530 had celiac disease. Patients with celiac disease were found to have significantly higher rates of coronary artery disease than non-celiacs. The rates were 9.5 percent for patients with celiac disease, compared to 5.6 percent for the rest.
